Where can one find A good repair manual or resource for repair information on a '99 subaru Outback. I'd like to start doing my own work but a little hesitant going in blind. I'm comfortable pulling my old Volvo apart but the Subaru is new to me so I'm looking for some sort of guide. Thanks for all the help

Hi,

 

The Haynes Manual covers the '96 through '99, I believe, since 2000 was the model change. While the manual is pretty decent, it won't give you details on anything other than basic maintenance. By that I mean that if you get a strange check engine code related to the transmission, or want to replace the clutch pack yourself in the tranny, you won't find it much help.

 

Having said that, I used a Haynes when we bought our '96 and have found it to be money very well spent. If you need detailed info, you can buy the factory manuals, which come in modules or the on-line downloads.

Nothing too outrageous. Mostly just maintainence Timing belt, valve adjustments, brake calipers etc.

98 vs 00 = totally different animals.

 

98 - dohc

 

00 - sohc

 

98 - maf sensor'd

 

00 - map sensored

 

there are tons of differences, nearly all the parts differ - you'll want to try to stick with something specific to your model year. is your 99 a DOHC or SOHC? my 99 was DOHC, platinum plugs, premium fuel, etc.

Its a 2.5L dohc 16v but I dont know much else about it. I noticed the Haynes manual only covers up to 98. Could I still get some use out of it for my 99? or are there too many differences? Like I said its my first subaru so these may be some pathetic questions. :-\

I'm looking for factory service manulas for my '93 Legacy Lsi wagon. For '93, that URL only lists the Impreza and SVX model lines. Isn't the Legacy a separate line? Any other ideas? TIA

you could get the paperback manuals from Subaru

 

subaru does it's manuals in the most complex way.

back in 92/93 they came in volumes.

then there were supplements to those volumes for each new model year

 

(following me? )

 

each volume dealt with a different aspect of the car

i.g. engine, drivetrain, chassis, wiring... etc

 

entire paperback shop manuals are about $300

but buying just the volume or 2 you need could save a lot of $ and get the job accomplished at the same time

 

any idea what specifically you'd be interested in?

i can look it up and get a quote

Yea looks like 95 is first year they have documents on the Legacy.

Might try ebay? I found the FSM there for my 91.

yeah sounds like my 76 FSM hafta goto the dealership to just find out how to do something simple and the FSM says to refer to this year FSM for information and it goes back to 72!
