November 12, 200421 yr the engine keeps cutting out when it is under stress, like full throttle or going up hills, this makes it very hard to drive, because it can only go slow, or it would cut out.
November 12, 200421 yr check your air filter. how is the ignition system? coil, plugs, wires, cap rotor? fuel filter (i doubt it, but easy to replace) anytime i'm faced with a problem i like to replace all this stuff to start, because it's cheap, keeps the car running good and eliminates them from the possibility. except the wires, i have magnecor wires that will never need replacing. everything else, i replace often. i don't know jack about brats...i guess it's carbed but if it is not - how are your fuel injectors, fuel pump? see any fuel leaking around the fuel injector seals? if it's carbed i can't help you much on fuel supply.
November 12, 200421 yr I second the motion on the Cap, wires, rotor. I'd give it a good basic tune and see if that doesn't clear it up? I had the same thing many years ago and it turned out to be a wire? A basic tune finally took care of it for me. Good luck Glenn 82 SubaruHummer 01 Forester
November 12, 200421 yr Author it goes like this: at full or near full throttle, it starts cutting out. today on the way to the college I had to drop from 70 to 55 to go up a hill (any more gas and it would have cut out) - you know how you have to floor it for hills there is a problem, I don't know what year the engine is from (it was replaced before I got it), and also what timing is specific for the engine. I got a new cap and rotor for it, but it didn't fit, also we changed the timeing and it made no difference, still does it. cap, rotor, tune up. got it, I'll figure out what its from oh and also, could the sceondary barrel on the carb somehow be causing this? the vac line to the secondary was cut and plugged, along with 4 others. maybe he did it for a reason. P.S. I removed the vac valve to the sec. and did the 1/3 throttle carb mod.
November 13, 200421 yr is your choke sticking closed? i had a problem like this on my 84 wagon and it was the choke
November 13, 200421 yr FUEL FILTERS!! Replace both of them and the problem should go away. One is in the engine compartment and the other is under the Brat near the tank on the drivers side I believe.
November 13, 200421 yr Author the choke is working alright, I am going to go to advance auto in about a half hour, I'll get fuel filters too.
November 14, 200421 yr Author I replaced the one in the engine bay, but not the one under the car, do you think that the filters are really the cause of this, how? not high engough fuel pressure? I have done so far: adjusted timing adjusted valves replaced cap, rotor, wires fixed exhaust leak the carb secondary mod
November 14, 200421 yr Author after I posted I put the other filter on and took it for a drive: IT DIDN'T DO IT!!!!! YES!!!! sorry for doubting you qman. now to see if it was just a fluke and test it on the highway tomorrow
