What would cause excessive tire ware on the inside of the drivers side rear wheel?

What would cause excessive tire ware on the inside of the drivers side rear wheel?

Too much negative camber is the first thing that comes to mind.

Is that something I can fix, of do I need to take it to a shop? I would rather fix it myself if possible. Thanks

You might want to jack the car up and see if the rear bearings are not loose. I'm not positive, but I dont think the rear is adjustable.

Ya, I did the wheel bearing check. That is what I was thinking. Wheel is solid. I looked at the manual and found no adjustments. I wonder if something is bent? I know with the I-beam Fords, if the camber is out the I-beams have to be bent with a press.

The only other thing I can think of to check then is the trailing arm, to see if its straight or not. The shock is ok, I assume?

Shocks don't match even might cause this problem. If they dont, replace both.

on 80-84 models rear wheel alignment can be adjusted - sort of - you have to loosen the three bolts holding the control arm to the torsion bar arm, and then move the hub around using jacks. I havn't done it, but have talked to a wheel alignment specialist, who said he had done it once - and would never do it again. I assume a similar adjustment is possible on the later models, but i certainly wouldn't bother trying it myself.

Probably a combination of things. Worn shock on that side and carrying too much work related gear in the back. It's pretty tough to bend the trailing arm.

Not saying the shock is good, but it sits even in the back. Shock seems to be OK, any way of checking it for sure? It is the adjustable type.

 

 

What about the bushing on the control arm where it is connected to the framework? If that was bad would that cant the wheel out? I tried moving it by hand, it was pretty firm.

i haven't seen the tire, but firing from the hip i wouldn't rule out a bad tire. swap tires in the rear and see if it happens to another tire before swapping anything unless you know it needs it. or rebuild your entire rear end if you got the time/$.

 

i'd double check your bushings and such in the rear and that mechanical linkage.

Well, after checking it out it appears to be bad/worn springs on the coilovers. With the rears completely raised and the front at it's lowest settings the rear only is 3/4" higher. Turbone has a set of shocks to replace them with and see if that improves the stance.

Looks like the problem still exists after trying different shocks and coils. Whats next on the chopping block?

 

If I have time Tuesday, I think I will take it in and have an alignment shop give me some opinions.

 

More input is welcome as I am not real knowledged on the Subaru stuff.

So the tire still isnt hanging with posi camber, its still neg?
