exhaust smoke

Recommended Posts

When I coast in my 84 GL, especially going downhill, a major smoke cloud comes spewing out of my exhaust when I step on the gas. This even happens after coasting for a few seconds, and has only started recently. My little brown beauty has 229K and I'd love to keep her running strong and clean.

Or either the valve stem seals are going or the rings...alowing oil to build up...and when you step on it, the oil is burned....
Standard reason for oil smoke occuring after high intake vacuum conditions is valve stem/guide issues. If the smoke occurred under acceleration (and not just transition to acceleration) it usually means rings.

Thanks for all the advice, this is my first post and I'm impressed. Not sure about the smell, as it tends to happen when I'm coming down from the mountains and moving along at a good clip, although maybe I could flag down the guy behind me who just got smoked out, though he's usually not too friendly...

Kinda sounding like valve stem seals, being that I just replaced the PCV valve and it only smokes during transition to acceleration after coasting. Are the seals something I should fix ASAP? For now, I've just been putting it in nuetral when I coast, and when I put it back into gear and step on the gas, no smoke cloud.

I'd start with Skips cheap and easy idea first. Maybe he can elaborate where you might find this under the hood specificly.

Valve guides/seals and piston rings are a pretty major undertaking. A shop will charge you a lot for this work for good reason. It requires removing and dissasembeling the entire engine pretty much. With that many miles on your engine and by the sounds of it this really isnt negativly impacting your driving I'd just live with it. Usually valves guides and piston rings do not wear out quickly... have you noticed this get worse over the years OR did it come on very quickly?

Also remember to top off yoru oil! If you are burning it off to produce that smoke then it's gonna get low. I check mine every time I get gas ;)

It seems to have come on gradually, and only recently has been getting worse. It's also recent that I figured out the coasting in neutral trick. It's an 84 4-speed standard tranny, and after looking around the site a bit it sounds like the vacuum modulators are only on automatics. Another idea I might try is to replace the whole PCV system by hitting up the local junkyard. Otherwise, I'll live with it, as problems go it's definitely not a doozy. So many good ideas on this site, thanks and praise to y'all, Subee owners are the best!

And if anyone figures out how to do the smoke screen on demand, I'd love to use it on the tailgaters, especially when I'm maxed out uphill on I70 at 50mph. No respect for the elderly (cars, that is).

if it were anything internal i'd suspect the valve train before the rings. the valve issues are easy to address if you or someone you know can do the work. all you have to do is pull the heads and take them to a machine shop. reinstall your heads and new gaskets and let me know when you see 350,000 miles. not sure what motor you have, but the EA82's are super easy to work on in my oppinion. if you straight up pay a shop to do it, it will be very expensive and very few will do it right (for a reasonable cost).

check your spark plugs and see which get dirty or fouled up, you might see a particular cylinder causing problems. a compression test might tell you more.
