January 3, 200521 yr I know some people here frowned at Valvoline oil, but I recently added my second batch of Valvoline Max Life oil to my 2.2. The first time I filled my 95 with it was with a $14.00 rebate for buying 5 quarts. Can't beat 5 free quarts of oil. This is the busy season, and I was bad and was late at changing the oil--went almost 5,000 miles with it. When I changed the oil two weeks ago it looked great--still that nice, light honey brown color. I don't know if there is any real difference between this Max Life oil (my car has 157K on my odometer) and their "regular oil, but I'm going to keep using it and see how things go.
January 3, 200521 yr I've been using Valvoline for a while. It's all my mechanic uses. I've been thinking about switching over to their Dura Blend which is part synthetic. ~Howard :cool:
January 3, 200521 yr I tried this oil about a month ago as well, also with the $14 rebate (which paid for oil + filter + a little extra), and was very happy with the results. My car had been leaking/burning a little oil between changes (3,000) but when I pulled the dipstick after 3,000 miles on the maxlife it was still full! My car is a slightly leaky high mileage daily driver that I bought far from new so this stuff is great for me. I haven't used synthetic in this car nor do I plan to. No complaints. -Heikki
January 3, 200521 yr I've been using Napa "brand" oil for quite awhile... I was told long ago, from a very honest "old timer" behind the counter at my local (not corporate owned) Napa that Napa's oil was the best non-synthetic Valvoline oil. I too need to do oil changes in both my 01 & 93, I checked the oil the other day and both are still honey brown in color. Can't say that about Havoline... I used to run that before Napa, I always remember pitch black oil, even shortly after changing.
January 3, 200521 yr I would not worry about the color. While some color change can be due to oxidation, most of it is due to engine cleaning. Anybody who drives diesel can attest to that, oil is pitch black withing miles after oil change. While I also got the free maxlife and durablend oils, Valvoline is considered one of the lesser brands, the virging oil analysis results show just adequate additives levels.

And if you didn't know, their Oil Filters are made by WIX which are the best there is! swi66

I'd always used Fram, but reading up on filters has decided to go a different route--I think I'll do a NAPA oil filter next go around...
January 4, 200521 yr For the past 4 times I have changed my oil I have used the $14 rebate form. I get 5 quarts of MaxLife and 1 Purlator PL14460. It seems like decent oil, and the price is right
January 4, 200521 yr I just have to chime in with my .02! If there is not a Napa close by, Carquest has Wix filters, and there Carquest Brand oil is also Valvoline. I am a Carquest counterguy, so I jsut had to give them a plug!
January 4, 200521 yr The Bad: Drove 2000 miles with out an air filter. Didnt torque down intake manifold gaskets which failed. Put in 4WD transmission crossmember backwards. Did not tighten driveshaft to differential bolts and drove 100 miles. Forgot to latch hood which flew up at 50mph. Subaru should hire you to test drive their new models.
