1979 brat, e81 with dual range tranny trouble

Featured Replies

it sounds like the gears are grinding when in fwd, worst when im acclerating or letting off the gas. in 4wd its still noticable but not nearly as bad. the sounds getting worse but not much difference in power still pulls nearly as well when giving it gas. I was wondering if the first thing i should do is drop the tranny? or if it could be somthing else. its a e81 with dual range.

Hey, is this my old Brat, the tan one?

Wheel bearing can be noisy too. Have you checked the gear lube in the trans? Does it do it in reverse?

You want to sell the wheels yet?

don't drive it much

probably low on gear oil - check tranny and rear diff

if it hasn't been changed recently, do so

yeh double offset joints can make a popping\knocking loud noise

I would put money on it being either the front outer or inner cv joint failing.

The reason that it may not be as noticable in 4x4 is that it is taking the load of the front drive.
