saab boost controller?

Featured Replies

where is the boost controller found on the saab? i found a saab 9000s turbo in the junk yard and already have the intercooler off of it.

The 'boost controller' on a saab is a mass of wires and components.. its not exactly a small simple thing

Where its located depends on what year the 9000 is.

i dunno caleb wasn't that hard to install it in my wagon :)

where is all the stuff to i can take it off.

True clayton, but you're special.

You pulled yours from an 86 9000 didn't you?

Why don't you tell this booy where the parts are located.. All my 9000s have been 92 and newer.

actually if i recal correctly mine was a 88 9000

also the apc on most of the 9k series also if i recal correctly is under teh drivers seat.. i think i will look it up and double check but for the install

you need teh apc black box <if you find a red one grab that its better but the black can be modified to red"standards" >

you need the pressure sensor doohicky thats under the steering colum looks like a small metal can with a vacum fitting and 2 spade terminals one of them being smaller than the other

you need the boost solenoid that control the air flow to the wastegate thats located on most that i have seen really close to the turbo on the 9k it should be right above the radiator has 3 vacum lines 2 go to the turbo one goes to the intake

if you want the knock sensor boost control capability then you want to grab the knocksensor off the motor on the motor all series 900 9000<that i know of > its underneath the intake manifold kinda a bluish in color thing

and yes .. i am special or is it mental... hmmm

i will add a few links that might help in a bit

http://web.archive.org/web/20010124...rtram/volvoapc/

http://forums.turbobricks.com/showt...ight=apc+wiring

the last one pretty much tells you why you should not try and power the apc unit off the coil + side

what i did was run a fused line direct to battery thru a relay to direct power the apc and then used the +side of the coil <when i had one> to trip the relay when the ignition came on thus giving full power to the apc with out loading down the coil wiring

as you read some of the wiring diagrams pay attention to the part about the pressure sensor as it does matter wich wire goes to the smaller and larger terminals if its backwards it will have no idea what the boost level is

i checked under the seat and found 2 black boxes that have some sort of plug with like 5 wires going to each one. in the pics the object on the right is the apc? the one on the left is the the boost thing that hooks into the turbo via vaccuum line from the top of the rad, i found the blue thing under the intake, do i need to take out the whole thing or just the plug part? and i can't quite get under the thing thats under the steering column, is that really far up in there? and will i need all the wire that go to this? thanks a tons guys

looks like you got yourself a relay and a pressure sensor.....

yeah i found out where the apc box is, its under the knee plate on the drivers side, its not under the seat till 88, thanks for the help anyways, lol looks like i get to have some more fun tomorrow.

True clayton, but you're special.

:lol::lol::lol:

Hey Clayton... If you come across an APC in your neck of the woods I'll pay you to pull it for me. More simple to have a Pro-person (or is it "more Pro to have a ..." ???) do it than for me to do it right now. And I may need one soon.

last i knew there where quite a few up in pdx at one of the u-pull-its i go to for parts

and one of those things in the pic the black thing that is is a relay the other round doohicky is needed because it is the boost solenoid that does all the wastegate pressure management stuff

or more correctly the apc controls it as it flutters open and closed to maintain the set level of boost

1 more edit out of 3 now lol

where at in oregon are you tysn?

ok now make it 4 edits last one was to get tysn's name right oops

im in the medford area of oregon, i think ill be going back to the jy in a few days to look under the knee support to find that apc thing. do i need all od the wiring also?

uh huh one you get the apc out unhook teh wiring harness from it crawl under the hood trace down the boost solenoid wiring the knock sensor wiring and follow them back thru the wire loom after seperating them up to the firewall if you tug on the grommet there and then cut it in half once its out you "should" be able to pull the whole apc harness out in one piece

if not there is no shame in cutting the knock connector and solenoid wires as long as possible and then cutting the apc harness under the dash as long as possible and solder them back together thats how mine is

i took all of the stuff off of the car but the wiring. im having the problem of finding where the wire come though the firewall at.

never got my APC up and running properly. thought I might have had a bad switching solinoid so I swaped it out. no good still just makes noise most of the time. on ocassion it will actually give me the increased boost im looking for.

I have not had the time or desire to track down what the issue is.

as of right now I am ready to pull my stuff off and scrap it.

I put about 60-80 $ into it so far.

if Clayton is not able to get one for you guys I might be willing to part with my set up if some one wanted to get it working. I have all the needed parts according to the resouces found on line.

I think I may just save up and buy a regular boost cotrol system. or leave it stock for now.

disconnect the knock sensor <if its hooked up> and the rpm/tach feed tot he apc off the coil

all it will work off then is the input from the pressure transducer

then it functions a purely boost based controller

that should help you narrow i down to either a bad ground... not enough power to the unit or a crappy transducer

they are picky about getting enough power i forget if i mentioned how mine is wired

but i used the + side of the coil to trip a relay to provide full batt voltage direct to the apc when the ignition is on.. its how my megasquirt turns on also

alright I will give it another chance. I will work on it today when I work on the new roof rack before work.

I really want the knock protection though.

for now this is just to make sure the basics of hte box works

afterwards you can hook up the other stuff

where did you blot he knock sensor to?

it might be picking up "background" noise and thus the box keeps it boosting low..
