March 13, 200521 yr So its got about 65~75 deg F in Atlanta today for the Test N Tune....and the STi TMIC, while all great and cool, is not the best choice for Autox conditions...and it NEVER stayed cool at all, its HOT.....its called HEAT SOAK. So....Looks like im going to look into really doing one of those 28x6x2 1/2 inch FMICs for the "civic S13/S14 Mazda etc" on ebay. There is a 20 inch long one as well...no more than $175 for either one. 6 inch height is PERFECT for mount to the bottom of the bumper on the RX. Plus...no heat soak! But...more pipe to presurize...so there might be a tad more lag...BUT...I am going to put a Deadbolt PnP VF7 on it, so that should take care of any more lag (there is NONE now anyhow) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7960735293&category=33742 heat soak is bad, mmmmkay....
March 13, 200521 yr I wonder if, since you're using the car for auto-x, a water-to-air intercooler might work well. It won't be great for long runs, but they're very effective for short lengths of time. Probably more spendy than the FMIC you're talking about, though.
March 13, 200521 yr Author In STREET MOD class I can....however...i might want to have the car preped for EITHER FSP or SM...I cannot use a AWIC. That and i dont have the stuff and $ to do it.
March 13, 200521 yr Not sure if you have room or not but I have a small 8" fan underneath my IC that I have wired to a relay/switch. Not only does it help suck air through the IC but also blows the heat away from the IC in the engine compartment. I don't race my car at all but I do run the IC fan while in traffic and on hot days. Seems to help alot, I have checked after sitting in traffic with it off...definite heat soak, checked after running the fan while in traffic and the IC was still cool on all sides. Maybe a solution for you, but my IC doesn't take up as much room as yours.
March 13, 200521 yr He can't use a water sprayer for autocross, ...rules. Nothing that would get water on the track.
March 13, 200521 yr Author He can't use a water sprayer for autocross, ...rules. Nothing that would get water on the track. ditto. illegal for all classes...even stock eventho the evo and sti come with them stock...cant use them.
March 13, 200521 yr instead of a front mount, why don't you just save time and spend the money on a hard line C0 2 spray kit?...C02 is cheaper to fill than NOS to cool your IC example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7960123512&category=38634&sspagename=WDVW
March 13, 200521 yr I'm with Brad on this one Will. Go with a CO2 spray setup and it'll leave no water on the track, PLUS it'll keep your turbo lag down and the cost of buying/fabbing a FMIC onto your RX...
March 13, 200521 yr yeah i plan on building a co2 system for my car also... since hell i work withthe dam stuff and can prolly fill my own bottles when no one is looking at work hehe 2 120 ton lco2 tanks and one 50 ton tank.. weeee i already got a bottle scale that was used for freon.. until i liberated it .......
March 14, 200521 yr Author Sprayers are illegal too. Cant use CO2, chilled water, ice, dry ice etc....just AIR. ANd I DID find out taht I CAN use Air to Water...since the actual heat exchanger is colled by air. :-p
March 14, 200521 yr Author I would.....but there is no room to do so....and I still need to get rid of the scoop to make the car FSP legal....FSP is a much cheaper class to run in than Street Mod. Im going to go with an AW unit, go back to the stock hood...and run SM some more and sort the suspension and driver out...then I'll move down to FSP i think.
