Mating a loyale and legacy motor and trans

Featured Replies

There is a service station near my house with 2 subaru's in its lot, a loyale sedan and a legacy wagon(96). The engine on the loyale is dead, the trans on the legacy is dead. Could the working motor and the working trans be mated together without a whole lot of difficulty? Thanks in advance.

PM Mudrat79. He makes an adaptor for the ej and d/r 5spd. He might be able to do you some good. But you'd be better off with the d/r 5spd.

It does not sound like an easy swap. An adapter plate is needed due to different bolt patterns and different bellhousing-to-clutch-surface dimensions (I have heard that the adapter plate needs to be 16mm to compensate).

... the trans on the legacy is dead...

Do you know in what way it is dead? Is it an auto or manual? The auto seem to die one of two ways: Either "torque bind" or a blown seal. With the blown front seal it might be easier just to replace the seal than to try to mate the different engine and tranny.

Im not sure in what way it died, the clerk couldn't give me any specific details when I asked.

i recently completed a similar swap, you use 12mm or 1/2'' aluminum or steel plate to make adapter, not that hard really, bottom 2 holes on EA and EJ trannies and motors share same bolt patterns, its only the top 2 that need to be fiddled with. you will need the ecu and complete wiring harness from the EJ car, then you will need to separate the wires that you need and dont need, get a chiltons and do some searching on this board, you will also have to use the flexible type radiator hoses, and modify the engine crossmember a little, do a search for EJ22 swap and look through all the results, and you will get a lot of answers, and many more questions. it would be a lot easier to do an engine rebuild or buy another EA82 motor for the sedan, or buy a tranny for the 96 subie, unless you like a really good challenge and have a car to drive right now. hopes this helps.

You guys are thinking Backwards.....:)

Why not take the Good Tranny out of the Loyale, and Stuff it in the Legacy.....No Wiring issues......:)

Only an adapter Kit needed to mate......

Or if the Loyale is Hi range only, Buy the Legacy cheap, and buy a Hi-Lo trans Cheap and Convert the Legacy that way.....

Don't be afraid to play both ways..... :brow:

Later, John

the loyale most likely has a broken timing belt. its possible the guy installed new ones and didnt line them up right, and therefore thinks it has bent valves which it wont(non interference)

the loyale should be easy to fix if you can get ahold of it, the legact probably has a torque converter seal leak and lost its fluid, wont go
