EA82 engine and transmission swap?

Featured Replies

Hello, my dad has offered to pay for a new engine and tranny for my 1984 Subaru Brat GL.

I will be using a 5 speed dual range EA82 transmission.

The first part is to decide what engine to use.

I want to use a EA82 Turbo, but there are some concerns I want to iron out.

my dad once got an xt from a guy who sells the older subarus, and he said to avoid turbos because they go bad and the parts are expensive for them, he actually takes out the turbo engines of the cars that he buys and replaces them with some other type!

I don't think that it is all true, but still, acusations should be answered

If I don't go turbo then what EA82 engine should I get?

there are the carbed, spfi and mpfi right?

if you don't get an EA82 turbo then I would stay with the EA81 just bulid it really good

I want to use a turbo engine but my dad believes what that guy I mentioned told him. is this stuff true?

The turbos on Subarus hold up pretty well. I don't hear of them breaking like I do on dodge/chrysler products. If you are planning on doing some off roading with your BRAT then I DO NOT recommend a turbo engine. You will be better off with a fuel injected or weberized turbo. If you plan on making it a "pavement pounder" then shoot for the turbo engine, 5spd, legacy 5 lug swap, and some larger wheels. Just some suggestions.....Good Luck! Boz

if your dad has heard if from some guy... then it will be hard to convince him otherwise. i have a dad too:D and some people just dont trust turbos for some reason. sounds like you should get a ea82 spfi motor, and put a weber on it. the spfi has higher compression, and a weber means no wierd wiring of the computer. by the way, the turbo motors last just as long as the na motors:brow:

what is that guy doing with the turbo motors? does he throw them away?. its not that the turbo is bad, he probably throws a carb in it rather than do a head gasket or timing belt. i'll bet the parts are still good. this guy must not know anything about turbos/heag gaskets. try to see what is wrong with it. but if it alrady rund doesnt mean that it id going bad. if you know about a few turbo detaild, and if the motor is in good shape, it could last a while with things like new oil pump seals and cam seals, timing belts, and water pump.

any soob that goes bad is over lack of subaru specific maintenence

you would have to get the wholw wiring harness.

its best to get all that you need from the same ar, if not get the whole donor car. its not exactly a direct bolt on but if you ket to know your subaru it can be done!

ok, lets just say I went with the turbo, what would I need to pull out other than the engine and everything connected to it?

the fuel pump right?

what else

EVERYTHING :D

Get all that you can now and throw away what you dont need later becuase if you do it the other way around you will have a long project on your hands :(

I would do this:

air intake

new exhaust (would have to make one anyway) what diameter?

intercooler

blow off valve

turn up the boost!

maybe higher comp. pistons for better low end?

It would make it less reliant on the turbo

Can I use the stock turbo hookup and just cut it off after the turbo ends?

how does the engine fit in?

okay, so, just get everything related to the engine and transmission, right?

also, who is the guy that makes a shift kit or something for the tranny swap?

The tranny mod is made by Jerry. A.K.A Bratsrus. If you post a new thread that reads ATTN Jerry or ATTN BRATSRUS you will get him. As for the Legacy 5 stud swap, check in the USRM, I think it's in there. I can't say for sure because I have never looked in there but that would be my guess unless there is a link that says MODS or something. Boz

ok, I will call on him when i get the tranny.

I'm not going to do the 5-lug swap?

you must be thinking of someone else.:headbang:
