I just purchased a 94 Legacy Wagon from Ney York and ran into a ton of problems with getting it back here. Some of which were due to the car others were due to New York excessively strict DMV Laws. I wanted to ask Folks to evaulate the value of this car. Knowing that most of the Folks on this board are enthusiasts, so assume you were like me and sick of fixing rusted out 80's GL and DL Sube's.

Air Suspension- assume it works

111,000 Miles

Excellent Interior

Two minor dents on exterior

A very small bit of rust beginning on passenger rear wheel well.

 

Keep in in mind I live in Wyoming. I know a car out East may be worthless or worth very little. But I simply could not find any 93-94 Legacies with less than 160,000 Miles.

I've been trying to sell my 93 with 202k, and everyone laughs at me. I guess I'll be keeping it, since it seems that I only know it's true value... It still runs and drives really nice.

 

I too was looking for a 93-94 with around 100k. No such luck. I saw a 90 Legacy L AWD Wagon advertised for $1295 with 131k. Must have been a good one, it was gone the VERY NEXT DAY !!!

You're kidding. There was a beautiful Legacy for sale in Kansas posted in the Marketplace about a month ago. I'd pay no more than $3500, but Lagacies go for pretty reasonable here.

It really depends on your locale. Down here, you wouldn't get more then $2000 for it. Up in your neck of the woods, probably $3000 or tad more....again, this depends on the condition, and locale.

Gnu and I just sold a 93 wagon with 185,000, new clutch, good paint, new brakes and clean body and paint for $2,200. This was very top dollar for this car around here from what I see. The thick file of maintence records and the way the car ran perfectly sold it.

Check Craigslist from different areas to get a feel for it. I like CA bodies on cars myself as there is no salt used here.

I suspect Texas Subarus are much the same.

What's difficult about NY DMV rules? I've bought and driven home cars from Texas, Ohio, Indiana, and Kansas in the last few years, never dealt with DMV. There seem to be a lot of cars from NY for sale on the internet, I've seriously considered a few, never suspected there would be hangups buying from NY.

Okay in New York you can not drive a car, on Ney York roads period without registration. For example, in Wyoming if you buy a car and have it insured then you can drive it for 30 Days on the Title alone. In New York you can't even drive it to the DMV. You need to get a Intrastate in Transit Permit just to get to the DMV. Well the New York DMV is like an all day event or at least a half a day. It is very hard to get anything done third party there as well unless it is a spouse or gaurdian or something like that.

 

If you were wanting to buy a car in Ney York and take it out of State then you can get an Interstate In-Transit Permit to get it out of the State of New York. If you are a non-resident then you would need a letter from any out of state insurance provider, that letter needs to be faxed to the DMV directly and there is a considerably long list of requirements that must met within the letter. In my case I had sent a friend to get the car because I have a newborn baby and a full time Job. Even though we had the seller put the title in my name and in my friends name, and I had him listed as an insured driver on the Car that was purchased, we could not get the permit. Due to the fact that the Geico policy was in my name and he was merely a Insured Driver, and not a Policy Holder. So to further complicate matters there are several DMV Offices and it does amount to work just to fax it to the right one. So the permits themeselves are not expensive or anything, they do reqiure better planning than what I had done. Also these permits are not recognized by the State of Mass ( I think Mass, it might be Maine? ) So maybe from where you are from it might not be a big deal. I am from Wyoming and it is really easy to get stuff done around here. We dont have to deal with the DMV for License Plates and registration becasue it all done through the County Treasurer.

 

If you do buy a car in New York make sure you have an Insurance Company that is willing to Fax the letter, and that you as the buyer are the one to go and get it. My only disclaimer about New York is that if you are having the car shipped on an open Transport or any Flatbed you do not need it to be registered. That would be a Department of Transportation issue and they said it does not need to be registered to be on a Truck-

 

On a side note other challenges in New York was for Subaru Service i.e. Grand Prix Long Island Subaru ( Located at 500 S. Broadway in Hicksville) Would not even work on my car becasue it was not registered. The lame part of that is that I told them my situation and they had me get it towed there. So I had to pay for the tow there and out of there. I waited until Monday to get the Permit so that they would work on it ( all I wanted was for them to put the Select monitor on it) Once Monday came they said that even if I got the permit then they would still not work on it because it was so old ... a 94? .... okay I dont get it. The Service Manager there seemed to have very little regard for human life.

 

A similarly lame expereince at Metric Subaru leads me to believe that all Subaru Shops of Long Island are Sub par and I truly pity any poor soul who breaks down there in a Subaru.

 

If you do buy a Car in Ney York and you dont want to deal with Subaru Dealerships or the DMV I recomend an awesome Auto Transport Broker- use Iron Horse Tranport of Orlando, FL- That guy hooked it up on a Sunday! The fastest and cheapest Broker I have found. He is not even on the Web- he can be found on 1-800-555-1212 ( Toll Free Directory Assistance) " Auto Transport " my only regret is that I did not call him sooner. Saturday, phone rang, guy wanting to see my 93... Did the standard looking it over, listening to it run, playing with all the accessories. Said he'd call me back on Monday, but he's interested. Well not even thinking about it, phone rang on Monday, Same guy, Still got the car... Came over and drove it about 10 minutes. Pulled back in to the driveway and handed me $1600 (had it advertised for $1700) and I drove it home for him.

 

Now I'm heading to the dreaded NY DMV to turn in the plates... Last time I turned in plates, they charged me a buck. Let's see if that has gone up too...

Ok, I tried, but I can't resist asking. Why didn't you just get in the car and drive it out of NY state? If your answer is: It's against the law. My comment is: So what!

I think the cheating way to do it would be for the current registered owner to get a trip permit so you could drive it out of there, or have the title mailed to you and go get WY plates- They only say new residents have to get vin inspections, not current residents bringing in out of state cars. Might be something to look into.

A 94 legacy from NY to me is worthless (its probably all rusty and crusty everywhere)

 

A nice clean PNW 94 legacy... maybe $750 for a so so one and $1500 if its really nice and has all recent services done. More if its turbo

 

Ha I didnt notice how old it was either... but its not my fault it got pulled to the top so I will leave what I originally wrote...

if you bought the car already, get the title in the mail, then register and insure it in wyo and put the wyo plates on it. then you can drive it or ship it back.

See, I'm not the only one who doesn't read the dates. At least I read the whole thread-
