Something Very Bad Happened

Featured Replies

yesterday when i putting in my new struts, some bad happened...at least i think it was bad.

When i removed my right front strut and spring, the brake disc obviously fell forward.. not a problem.

The problem was, however, that the axle fell out of the transmission. I was able to get it back in, but the fact that that happened scares me.

Should i be worried?

What else were you replacing? I dont see how replacing a strut can have the effects you describe. Did you remove the ball joint?

No roll pin? Shouldn't have done that. Did you take the roll pin out?

Take the axle loose from the transmission, line up the holes and beat a roll pin into the dished side of the hole in the axle cup. can't remember the name of

that end. DOJ?

Did the DOJ cup slide off of the tranny axle-stub, or did the axle pull loose from the DOJ cup (i.e. - DOJ slid apart)?

I'd check the end for wear before sealing everything up, and replace the boot if it looks worn too.

I think he means «out of the transmission» (front differential), not out of the stub shaft.

I never removed the stub shaft out of the trans, but I think there is supposed to be a circlip there to hold the shaft in.

there was a snap ring, but as far as i could tell, that was it. yes, out of the transmission.

we put it back in after greasing the end with assembly goo for good measure, and everything works swimmingly

If you put the shaft back in and the snap ring «snaps», then I dont think there is a problem.

But just out of curiosity how did replacing your struts lead to the shaft being pulled out of the differential ?

when the brake "system" (caliper/ disc) leaned forward after removing the strut, it pulled the axle out.

I don't know how, it didn't happen on the other side.. which is why i'm worried.

Glad it went back together OK. Like they say, if it has tits or tires on it, you're going to have trouble.

With a name like "SevenSisters" you would be expert in at least one of your assertions.:)
