EA71 4spd S/R -5spd S/R ??

Featured Replies

The red Camper Special 1980 BRAT that I have, is an EA71 with the 4spd and S/R transfer case. A neighbor noticed that we have lots of Subaru's, and gave me 2 2WD 5spd trannies. Would it be possible to transfer the "transfer case" from the 4spd to a 5spd? Thus making the 2WD 5spd, into a 4WD 5spd? I plan to travel alot in my "mini-mini motorhome" and would like to have the overdrive gearing of the 5spd.

Thanks!

if there is a way, I wanna know cause I got a 2wd 5-speed that would work very nicely in my wagon.

Sorry but you can't do that conversion. The drive gear for the transfer case on a 4-speed 4wd transmission gets swapped for the driven gear for 5th gear on a 2wd 5-speed. Also 4th gear on a 4-speed 4wd is an overdrive gear.

Subaru's do not have an external transfer case. All the 4WD components are built in with the 4WD Transmission. There is almost no way to convert a 2WD to a 4WD. Or convert a 4WD 4spd to a 4WD 5spd.

yeah - they are similar at first glance, but if you look closesly you will notice that the casing of the 2WD (at least half of it anyhow), is different. There's a bulge on one that isn't on the other. However - I'm sure that many of the parts from the 2WD would fit inside the 4WD, if you were to need syncro's and what not. That is - if you wanted to open one up. Could be ugly inside.
