July 9, 200520 yr Heya, I am wondering what would be the best option for a custom exhaust for my '85 EA81 Brat? I have a weber, I have eliminated all the smog gear, and I want to get more flow with out sacrificing any mileage. I have been told that the stock pipe is really a smaller pipe with-in the outside pipe, so should I simply have a full diameter pipe made minus the cat, or can I go the next size up in pipe along with opening up the exhaust manifold a bit with out losing MPG? I know that the more flow and power increase you generally get less MPG, so I am hoping to just come to the point that I maximize the performance with the "stock" MPG. Is this possible? Or maybe I can just gut my cat to get more flow?
July 9, 200520 yr ok i just had a exhaust put on so ill do my best to help... leave on stock y-pipe, i left on the cat, but took off the resignator. then go 2inch-2 1/4 inch all the way out. go with a high flow turbo or glass pack muffler. then top it off with a fart can just kidding
July 9, 200520 yr BTDT: used the complete exhaust system that I had on my ea82 '85 wagon it was 2" from the y to the tailpipe, with a glasspack in the stock rear position
July 9, 200520 yr 2" would be the best. use the stock Y pipe and have 2" pipe welded to the rear. Straight pipe sounds good, but a nice muffler will help to create some backpressure and bring your low end power back. -Brian
July 10, 200520 yr Author OOOOO! I like Skip's the best so far! and I think I will leave the "fart" can to the kids with the "go-fast" stickers on their hondas :-p (btw ... I LOVE that name "fart can" it fits perfectly!! ) please give me a total run-down on what you got skip, including price of materials! and btw ... it sounds like everyone is saying leave the stock headers? I thought they were a bit restrictive ...
July 10, 200520 yr Hey Dayn This is Jerry, come to the show and you will see one of the best ways to do your exhaust. I have it on my 86 hatch back, well all i can say it is true dual exhaust. See you at the show. Thanks Jerry
July 10, 200520 yr i think you should put on the fart can, then when they start revving up their engine and giving you a headache at a stoplite, you can just rev up your engine and then run him over
July 10, 200520 yr Author i think you should put on the fart can, then when they start revving up their engine and giving you a headache at a stoplite, you can just rev up your engine and then run him over LOL!!! I like the sound of that .... and the "fart can" would have other great uses .. like insulting someone in a clasical monty python way "I FART in your general direction!" :burnout:
July 10, 200520 yr Author Hey Dayn This is Jerry, come to the show and you will see one of the best ways to do your exhaust. I have it on my 86 hatch back, well all i can say it is true dual exhaust. See you at the show. Thanks Jerry Sounds good Jerry! I'm planning on making it to the show and then visiting my folks too :-p (I'm not telling them why I want to wait till the middle of July )
July 10, 200520 yr hey as i used to say, your killin two birds with 1 stone. i like the sound of "fart can" to. i wonder what kinda noise it would make if it backfired:lol:
July 10, 200520 yr FB, the system uses 2" pipe that fits well over the stock head pipes. The twin "Y" connectors are positioned at the point where a coating of paint stopped burning off the original non-cat Y pipe. (old hot rodders trick for finding where the balance tube should go) Twin semi baffled cans give it a mild rumble some say sounds like a small V8. The carb is a Weber 32/36, with this combo she has improved torque across the rev range. Just yesterday she pulled a 1000 pound golf cart on a five hundred pound trailer with no problem what so ever.
July 11, 200520 yr Author kewl, Skip, I will have to see when I get mine made if I can just show the muffler guy some pics of yours and Jerry's systems to give him ideas .... I don't have the equipment or knowledge to make my own so I will use the guy in Missoula who has kept a friend of mine on his insurance even though he has had some serious problems. John has grand maul seizures and is having exploratory brain surgery to find their source. This is a very small local company that has a cobra health plan, so it's been costing the business something around $600 per mon. to keep him on, John has been unemployed due to his condition and is having this done in LA in a couple of weeks. Hopefully this will be the solution, the surgery alone is life-threatening, so needless to say I want to give this muffler shop my business.
