what engine to put into my 88DL

Featured Replies

that my question

i would like some input from you guys

nothing too hard but will be fun and get some good power at the same time

what kind of car do you have now? -and motor

edit: forget i asked, i am a idiot

anyway, im not sure how hard it is to drop in a ej22 but there is a few people on the bord that have in a ej 22. maybe try a ej18. i am old and i cant remember who, but someone on here had a ej18 in.

if its ea82, just slap a turbo on it:brow: its not that easy, but probly easier than a complete swap, and it will increase your power.

if not that, how about an ej25t:grin:

the EA82 thats in it right now is just wasnt working well like just not working

ive been thinking about the ej22 but are there any other engines that arent subaru that would work

im sure there are lots of engine swaps that are possible, you could try, dare i say, a honda motor, or perhaps a toyota motor. Problem is, our cars were designed for the layout of a horizontally opposed engine, the engine-bay is not that long, but is wide. so fitting a transverse mounted enigne would prove to be a decent replacement. but would require much fabrication to fit non-subaru motor mounts into. do some searching, and thinking, there are plenty of options, i for one say go for EFI, and for more than 100 ponies.

what would i need to if i just slapped a turbo on it. would it just be easier to put a ea82t in there and do as much as i could to that or what

Its a little more involved than just slapping on the turbo, but we are talking engine swaps...

Depends on what you want. The turbos are relatively gutless when off of boost (7.7:1 CR), and have other quirks. If you want to do anything where low end throttle response is important then you might want to reconsider a turbo. (Yes, this can me mitigated, but requires some more "slapping".)

You might be able to go Nissan for engine and tranny if you want just RWD. The other problem other than engine compartment length is height. Subaru worked at getting a low hood line.

Does anyone have a ball-park estimate for an EJ swap into the EA model?

I'm considering this for my Brat (budget rally project). Aside from the engine-transmission adaptor, what does it cost for an EJ engine[harness, etc.] and how hard is it to install in an EA?

i bought my EJ22 for $400 and harness with ecu for $120, then i spent like $280 for 2 sets of XT-6 clutch kits, not to mention the about $150 for the 2 adapter plates i made and the cost of various trips to the JY. so add that up and you get about $950-$1,000 for the swap, and i did all the fab work with my dad. if i were to do it again, i would do the swap into an 88 sedan FWD, swap the EJ22 into it and the 5 speed D/R 4WD drivetrain, that way i would only be paying insurance on a FWD 1.8L car. and it would be about 200 lbs lighter, but wouldnt have the cargo room.........i like cargo room........but for rally the sedan would prove to be better id think. and throw the 5 lug suspension on it for better brakes, springs, and sway bar. or you could do the SPFI swap, still 1.8L but with EFI, its a little bit easier to do than the EJ22 swap, but i believe that you still have to strip a harness apart, just not as a confusing harness, not as many sensors.
