Hey Yall,

 

I just bought my first subaru about 4 months ago its a 1980 2wd DL. I fell in love with the thing and now own a 1983 GL 4wd, i'm looking to put a lift kit and some other fun stuff my the '83 but i dont know too much about where to find lift kits and such. One last question, i noticed the lug setup on the subies are strange does that mean i can only use the subaru stock rims or is there a way i can convert the hubs? thank for your time and get back to me if you can.

Best thing to do is use the Search function at the top of the page. Any question you have will be answered in some previous thread. Even checking out the first few pages of the "Older Generation" forum will answer a lot of questions. Welcome to the Board!

Welcome to the subaru community. There are multiple lift kits out there to buy.

IIRC

EA81s are in wagons and sedans up to 84, BRATs and Hatchbacks had them after that.

EA82s are in wagon and sedans from 85 on.

 

Easiest way to tell is if it looks like your 83 wagon then it's an EA81.

You can also to look at the engine. There should be an engine stamp on the front passenger side of the block. Finally the distributor on the EA81's are located on the front passengar side of the engine, while the disty on the EA82s are on the rear driver side of the engine.

i'm pretty sure its all stock, but i got the thing for free and suposidly all it needs at this point is a fuel pump.

 

If its a stock '87 sedan it will be a 1.8 (EA82). The 2.2 and 2.0 are the later EJ series engines that came in the Legacys and Imprezas.

Both your '80 and '83 will have an EA81 in it. They are OHV and have no timing belts or chains. To lift it, look into a PK Davis lift or one from AA. If you want to run larger tires you can get Peugeot rims that have the 4x140mm lug pattern in 14 or 15" size. Your stock subie rims are all 13".

 

You can also drill out your hubs and make them 6x140 with ease and use any common toyota or 6 lug rim.

 

The '87 Sedan you are getting will have a EA82 in it. 1.8liter with OHC and timing belts. If its turbo, check it for compression. Chances are a free '87 Turbo will need much more than a fuel pump.

right on thanks for the knowledge i appriciate it. the '87 has good compression and has new timing belts on it. the guy i got it from was towing it to the junk yard because a customer of his didnt want to pay for the timing belt and gave him the car. it does run but the people who had it before didnt put the right fuel pump on it and its not putting out enough psi to actually move. but it idles really smooth for a suby. he said if i want to keep it just give him 50 bucks for the belt he threw on it and its mine.

I'm Not going to be able to make it to the event i gotta get some stuff done here, my girlfriend has a 70 cutty and i have to rebuild all the brakes and rebuild the entire front end before i can get my 1980 sube back from her.

as for the lifts basically what everyone said.

now, if you wanna go huge, like 6inch +, go with mudrat79(john). the 3inch and 4inch, it seems like pretty much every one runs byb(ozified)lifts. the AA lift is a new one, but seems to have its pros and cons. if you want to check out what some big lifted ea81 wagons look like check out rooinators ride at

Shoot i cant even get started on my project cars because i have to fix her cars all the friging time. she has the cutty, a 1960 toyopet that she wants me to restore and she trying to get me to make my 80 sube into a chopped show car. her excuse for having lower the 80 sube is that i have the 83 and 87 to make into 4x4s. :P
