Utter N00b... questions about the differences rx gl-10 and tranny

Featured Replies

So what is the difference between an RX and a GL-10 turbo awd sedan? are they pretty much the same thing?

How about the trannys? Im looking for one to build up for drag purposes... it only has to last a few runs since the car is going to be reeeally cheap. I have a couple of options. One is a fulltime awd 5spd the other is a pt awd 5spd. Is the awd in the PT better for launches?

How about the DR does that work like in a jeep where you have a lever to pull?

Is there a hi/low/ button on the shifter? What EXACTLY happens with the high/low? is there a different center diff setting? different final drive ratio?

thanks for your answers... the engine stuff i think i have under control.. I'm going to go with the stock internals, disable fuel cut, set up a pressure switch to power another injector which i will install after my wrx IC. I will also be using a TD04 to be set to 15.5 psi. I will then try my luck with that setup (i'm going to be using a ghetto dual stage mbc so i can only use the high-boost setup when i need it), and stick in another injector later on and try running 19 psi with race / high octane fuel... i think at that point stock fuel system might be maxed.

If the car makes it this far, i will either sell off all the parts or try something like upgrading the fuel system to accommodate more injectors and go to a vf22 or 34 hehe.

First & second question.

The engines are the same for the RX and GL-10. They came with different trannies. The RX has Fulltime 4wd with D/R and center diff lock (there is a AT version). The GL-10 sedan has the single range tranny. Some GL-10's came with a LSD diff, the RX has it stock.

The D/R selector is manual, some say this is the tranny for better launches. The pushbutton single range is prefered for the street (not racing). I dont have the ratios at the moment (I'm eating), maybe someones else can post them. The diff lock does just that, its to lock the center diff to make the power ratio to front and back the same.

I've used a PT4wd tranny on a few launches in a friend's '87 turbowagon. Tranny is a part time 4wd d/r from an '85 RX.

I'm pretty much looking to do this to the white 86 gl-10 in the FS threads. He has a PT 4wd 5spd from a non-turbo in there. Think this would be suitable for my applications?

mine has a real dual range tranny, where as its in fwd most of the time until you pull on the lever, then you have 4wd high and 4wd low. mine has no center diff, its the older style of d/r tranny with two output shafts.

mine also hasthe rear lsd.

i really want ot find another set of thses for another project i want to do. if i ever geta brat, i want ot do an rx conversion to it so ill be looking for another 4wd 5sp tranny with a matching rear lsd.

i loved the set up on back roads at speed, the drive line binding didnt occur when i was on back roads doing around 45mph+, the only time i noticed any kind of binding was when i was taking tight turns at low speeds in 4wd.
