July 14, 200520 yr I need a new clutch, it's mushy. Northwest Automotive who specializes in Subaru quoted me at $400. This includes new clutch, resurfaced flywheel, and a new rear seal (transmission?) He said he would use genuine new Subaru parts. Sounds like an OK deal to me. Opinions?
July 14, 200520 yr sounds real good to me. About two weeks ago i had my shop replace my rear main seal because it was leaking all over the place. Taking down the tranny and everything else involved cost me 700 dollars...but its good to know that your car doesn't leave big puddles where ever it goes :-)
July 15, 200520 yr i just did this work to a 86 3dr cpe... 125.00 for clutchkit including alignment tool and seal 35.00 resurface flywheel didnt pull motor, just popped two nuts off motor mounts took 2 hours total, in a gravel driveway (admire my textured back)
July 15, 200520 yr didnt pull motor, just popped two nuts off motor mounts Was this after you pulled the tranny? Does it make it easier somehow to undo the motor mounts?? I got paid $120 bux to do a clutch job on an 88 rx.. i think they paid about $130 for the clutch kit.. came with an alignment tool. $400 is a good deal I think to have a shop do it for you.. because then it has some kind of warranty right?
July 15, 200520 yr That doesn't sound like too bad of a deal if you absolutely can't do it yourself, but swapping a clutch is fairly easy. I just did one a few weeks ago without pulling the engine. It took me a lot longer than two hours, but I got it done after work one day plus an hour or so the next. It's a lot easier if you have a buddy to help too. The question I would have is what do you mean by mushy? I wouldn't replace a clutch until it started slipping.
July 15, 200520 yr nope didnt pull the transmission... i find it easier to pull the motor than the transmission in cases where one has the option. if youre not someone who actually enjoys "taking the dive" then i would go with the mechanic's quote.
July 15, 200520 yr new rear seal (transmission?) Just a heads up, its the rear of the engine that bolts up to the Front of the tranny. spock would say that logically that would make it the engine seal. just a razz
July 15, 200520 yr i think i roasted mine picking up 24 boxes with 6 quarts of oil in each one. I had the only vehicle working that day that had enough room to carry it all. And everybody there knew I towed a truck up a hill so they knew my car could do it.... but my clutch is all to ************ now. We were really busy that day..... and apparently the truck from O'Reilly never delivered the oil they were supposed to.
July 15, 200520 yr $400 is very reasonable. As Humble Nuto pointed out you can do it yourself for half that. Upto you.
July 15, 200520 yr bro john there at northwest automotive is a great guy, the man always helped me out with my xt when i was having problems. 400 is actually pretty cheap.
July 15, 200520 yr Author John is the guy I talked too. I'm too inexperienced to do it myself and 400 sounds like a good deal, but I'm kinda strapped right now. Just a few more temp jobs I keep telling myself. Just a few more...
