Fender Triming Techniques?

Featured Replies

Im about ready fire up the engine and then its fender triming time. I'd like to roll the sheet metal where I trim so that I dont risk slicing my tires when I stuff them up into the wells.

I have access to a sawzall and an arsanal of hammers. Any other tools I should get that day?

What are some tips and tricks for doing some clean rolls? It doesnt have to look that good but I also dont want it to look like total mess.

Any other good ideas about making clearance for these 30"s ?

Thanks!

Hmmm been talking to some other people. A friend suggested going the "baseball bat trick". I guess you just wedge the bat between the vender and tire then "roll" them in. I would need to trim away the current fender "flares" for that to work cuz if I did it now they would roll OUT. That would look pretty... horrible. Anyone else tried this?

Another guy on #cars said rent a fender roller. Never heard of renting one. I spose I'll call around and see what the deal is on those. That sounds like a more intelligent idea to me but I'm all about the ghetto fab if thats what it comes to :D

I just dont want it too like like a shark took a bite out of my fenders LOL

Peace

I've heard of the baseball bat trick, but I don't think it would work on a sube. But isn't the point of cutting the fenders so that you don't rub? Just keep cutting until you can't get them to hit, then take a file to the cut edges and make them nice and rounded. If you really need to keep a fender lip (i guess it would be stronger vs dents too) you could weld one in. Heres a pic of a fender roller:

Ya that looks a little too fancy for my blood LOL

when I modified the rear of my front fender well, I made cuts perpendicular to the curve of the fender about 2-3 inches apart (as deep as you want to "roll" it back), then I used a hammer to gently :D push the sections back. so at that point in the fender well, my "lip" is a few inches wide instead of .5" I also left enough space behind so it can be cleaned out of any mud or nasty salt in the winter....

Note: This is on a 80-84 fender....

just wait 6 more months, and mother nature will take care of it for you. damn minnesotas love for salt!:-\

I would just start cutting and smashing but McBrats method works well also.

I did the front fender of the old wagon mcbrats way... wasn't nearly as gentle at the hammering part, and I used a sawsall and a freehand line as a guide. I stole that pic off of another site, I've never had a tool that shiny or discs with holes, only cracks :D
