August 5, 200520 yr camslap keeping car from starting??? I put a different head on my car and used the valves and springs from that and when it turns over I hear camslap? it is not ticking it is just click click click.... anyhow... going to replace head tommorrow.... again... with different valves and springs... but I still have a no start situation... I cant get the distributor in right any one know how were to do this..... what is the best way to get it done... I want to go to the beach in my hot little car... Xoomer
August 5, 200520 yr tick tick is probably not pumped up with oil yet.... do a search for timing belt install... double check that. i dont thing you have to pull the head yet, few minutes search and double check your work... might get lucky
August 5, 200520 yr for the distributor, put the crank at top dead center, 0*, by the marks on the flywheel. You want the passenger side cam to be pointing north west, and the driver side cam to be pointing South East. Now, align some marks on the distributor up, then install it pointing to the #1 plug. This is all from part 1 of the service manual on page 166 from the finleyweb website.
August 5, 200520 yr Verify that the belts are in the correct position by setting the flywheel/flex plate to the center of three marks. The cams should be up and down in this position. After you have made sure the belts are in the right spot you can go on to the distributor. Remove the #1 plug, place your finger over the hole and rotate the engine untill pressure is felt(compression stroke). Check the timing marks until "0" is seen. Now, check the rotor location, is it pointing to the number 1 wire? If not adjust accordingly. This should start your car. Then let it run for a minute or more to pump up the lifters(HLA's). I'm just wondering if my valves are not opening correctly due to said cam slap... because is was working ok... but now not...
August 5, 200520 yr did you make up the term cam slap? its nothing to do with a valve, it would start and run on three, or even two cylinders if everything else was correct.
August 5, 200520 yr If you did the work on one head, and not the other one, and it ran all right on before the repair, then it would run on the side that you didn't remove the head. That would lead me to believe that there was a problem with the repaired side. But since it won't run at all, then it leads me to believe that it is a problem with the over all motor, i.e. fuel or spark. Since it is backfireing that would lead me to believe that it is getting fuel. And since it IS backfireing, I would go with a timing issue. Either the cam timing is off, and it's fireing when the valves are open or slightly open, or the spark timing is off. Thos would be my first checks, the spark and valve timing.
