Ok. First thing. Does the SPFI off a EA82 fit onto a EA81? (i figured MPFI wont already :rolleyes:)

Second thing. Will I be able to put a turbo on the N/A SPFI ECU?

Thrid, will putting a turbo on my EA81 lower offroad performance at all?

Fourth, I asume the only stock turbo'd EA82's were MPFI?

 

After getting my 27" tyres I am having trouble going the speed "i want to go" on the roads. So I thought adding a turbo to the mix might help. Oh and one other thing, I'm running twin hitachi carbs. So will the SPFI be as good as twin carbies?

hmmm, not sure if youd get enough fuel with spfi to run boost, you might have an issue with running lean. also, you might need a different cam, turbo cams have less overlap than n/a cams.

 

it could work, but it wouldnt be easy.

 

it might hurt you at low end unless tou can get the turbo to spool up earlier than it normally does. any thing is possible if you take your time and have some money to burn.

 

research everything first, figure out what boost range you will want, where your rpm range will be for the power band. that should help you determine what youll need to do for your build up.

There is a dude who put SPFI on his hatch and then a turbo on that. He ran it pretty well, cant remember his name but he hasnt been seen for years.

TURBOSPFI runs a turbo'd EA82 SPFI. You might want to ask him about his experiences. Sounds like he is able to run 6-8 psi without major issues.

Hmmm... looked up some of his posts... and it seems that he has been banned recently...

The SPFI, MPFI and CARB ea82 motors have all the same dimensions.

EA81turbos do exist

Have you considered an ej22, there are quite a few aussies with big tyres that use these engines in their brumbys and pre 85 subes

Find yourself an ea81t. They have reasonable power, and the turbo (tiny wee vf1 or vf2) spools up from around 2000rpm. Best bit is they still have that unmistakably ea81 feel .

Well.

Number one reason for wanting to do this, more power on the road.

Number two reason, I have fun modifing stuff :D.

Number three reason, I love the sound of my engine :grin:.

Number four reason, it wouldn't cost a whole lot.

I have thought about just getting a EA82T, or a EA81T, and deffenatly thought about the EJ22 (have heard its hard to get the car thru TransportSA tho. But I just love the good ol' EA81's.

 

EDIT* So you are saying theres no such thing as a fuel injectored N/A EA82 here in Australia?

 

I'm thinking the easiest thing to do would get a SP carb manifold, mod it to take two injectors right near the heads. And find a throttle body that i canb fit to the bit the carb normally goes on. Sounds like a lot of fun, god knows if its in my possiblity, but I can always learn. Oh and use a Megasqurit or the like ECU. Any thoughts on that?

You may be able to find a ea82 mpfi na car, but probably not the spfi. The ea82 mpfi will be of no use to you if you want an ea81 - totally incompatable.

 

Problem with putting two injectors in one intake tract: All four injectors fire at the same time on the stock ecu. If the two injectors are not separated, you will find that one cylinder gets almost all of the fuel and the other almost none. If you go aftermarket, you could get them firing at different times, but i still wouldn't trust it too much. You'd be better off finding some ea81t heads - they have holes for fuel injectors in them. I have some spares, unfortunatly i think one of them may have a crack in the intake port somewhere.

Yeah, I read that the MPFI was totaly different. So MPFI heads have holes for the injectors? Like spark plugs have? Only prolly before the valve right? It would be nice getting some EA81T heads, but I dont like my chances. I was thinking if the timing was just right the modded manifold would work. But as you say, how good can you get the timming. I might ask on the Megasqurit forum if it would be possible.

the injectors arent in the head, they are in the runners on the manifold.

 

you might be able to run two injectors on the runners aiming em at the inlet port on the heads.

The injectors are in fact in the head on ea81ts.

Well, i'd say just get an ea81T and drop it in. I can see you spending thousands and not getting the performance you wanted, or not getting anything.

I agree. They can't be that rare over there - i managed to find two over here - one in the car, and i found a spare for parts later on.

Well so far I only plan on speanding money on the engine, a Megasquirt ECU, and some injectors. The rest IO can make up as I go along. Oh and a turbo somewhere along the way. Its turned into not so much the money or power. But more of, can I do it. And this'll be fun :D I think my idea will work. Now I need to prove it!
