September 24, 200520 yr everything i have ever read, or seen says the cams are the same for all ea82s. im sure i could call my dealership and bug them with the question, but never have.
September 24, 200520 yr Author 1stsubaruparts.com. funny thing is it lists different parts....or at least different pricing for the XT and XT Turbo. but it doesn't show actual part numbers. BUT - this is where it gets funny, all EA82's (turbo, non-turbo) have the same cam EXCEPT the XT NON TURBO? this is assuming that the pricing indicates the same cam, which makes sense. the XT Non Turbo has a different priced cam than all the rest???? according to the pricing: A $143 cam for all EA82T's, all EA82 coupes, SPFI's, sedans, and wagons. BUT - the XT nonturbo has a different cam for $276. All EA82 cams are indentical with the exception of the nonturbo XT? figure that one out?
September 24, 200520 yr the only thing i can think about that is... the xt is the best car to look for na mpfi. its pretty rare to find na mpfi in a wagon or sedan or anything else, so maybe the na mpfi motor had a different cam? it does seem wierd that the 9.5:1 na motor came with the same cam as a 7.7:1 turbo motor... thats it, im callin my buddy at subaru
September 24, 200520 yr doh, closed on saturdays, wish harley was :-\ i'll have to call monday. by then, im sure somebody will post some scans of parts books, or something
September 24, 200520 yr I believe all the cams are different for carb, SPFI, N/A MPFI and Turbo, and I'm pretty sure the early EA82T '85-'86 is a diff cam than the late '87+, note the ratred HP change from 111 to 115, Maybe the '85-'86 turbos used a cam from one of the other induction types? Factory part numbers should tell us. Gary
September 24, 200520 yr i always assumed the flapper style efi system just made less power than the updated hotwire system.
September 24, 200520 yr Thought that the Turbo cams had less over-lap of the valves, or something like that.
September 24, 200520 yr Author found lots of thoughts in searches that's why i was trying to find something definitive.
September 24, 200520 yr I am basing this post on memory of what I believe that I read in my 85 FSM (currently on loan to Scoobywagon). IIRC correctly, for 1985, the Turbo cams had very little overlap compare with the non-turbo. I don't remember anything about duration or lift specs. I would think that you would be disappointed in performance of high-overlap cams in a turbo application, at least at low-to-mid engine speeds. Low-overlap cams should pump up the low-end (and fuel economy) of a non-turbo engine; it might also push it to more easily detonate.
September 24, 200520 yr Author one day i'll start a thread you don't reply too...... you said "low overlap should pump up fuel economy". so if the turbo cams are indeed lower overlap those would be better to use on an NA setup for best gas mileage (highway driving).
September 24, 200520 yr IIRC...the 85 86 turbos used the same as the CARBs. In 1987+ all turbos came with specific turbo cams. Otherwise, SPFI and MPFI had specific cams....as well as CARB. This stright from the aprts catalog. i will look at my paper one again when i get home to confirm.
