October 16, 200520 yr I have a 87 wagon that I just bought a new motor and tranny for. Its a 1.8 t but I was wondering if there was a bigger turbo that you can put on the motor without changing alot of stuff?
October 16, 200520 yr 2.2L Legacy Turbo fits without much mods, thats about it. TD04 from a WRX fits quite nicely with some of the same mods.

October 16, 200520 yr Bigger turbo = bigger lag. Are you sure you want a bigger turbo, or one that is better mapped for your engine. A bigger turbo can pump more air/fuel mixture into your engine, but the down side is that there is more inertia (spinning mass) to overcome. Turbo lag is the time it takes a turbo to overcome the inertia, to get back to producing boost. Sometimes the best thing to do is to get a bigger compressor side to your exsisting turbo, this will only slightly increase the mass while increasing the amount of air/fuel mixture. In a lot of cases, bigger is not always better. Now if you are only drag racing the car, this doesn't matter, but for a daily driver it does.

Spyder intake not required - At least the TD04 on my 87 wagon didn't require using a spyder.. Maybe your install is different;) Uppipe flange is the same for the TD04 and the VF10-12 (I think) Down pipe flange is the same for the TD04 and the VF10-12 ( I know this for a fact) Spool times are not noticeably different between the stock turbo and the TD04. Boost comes on just a tiny bit later, but it also moves more air at lower boost than stock.

I don't think a VF22 with antilag on a stock motor would last very long;)

October 17, 200520 yr Any reason you want to put a bigger turbo on it? I like my stock turbo..but it doesn't like me..I have the boost turned up a touch (around 10psi) right now and the car doesn't seem to protest it much. I've run 25 psi....not a good idea unless you dont like that "new" motor...Mine has never pinged or done anything funny except blow off the intercooler at 25 psi..Im just lucky I supose..A/F gauge says its not lean...I dono.. Read as many posts as you can if you decide to turn up the boost...I've learned one thing about increasing the boost on your ru...read what everyone has done,and combine. Everyone does it diffrent, some right, some wrong. Good Luck!
