October 23, 200520 yr Hi All, Wondered if anybody can help, I've just bought an XT coupe 1986 with an engine fault, it starts reves up but only when driving it will only go up to 2500 rpm the turbo light flashe on and of. the ecs light is on on the dash and has a code 31 and 22 showing on the ecu, aparently the guy i bought it of said he bought it from a mate who took it to a garage to have it chiped and it didnt work right from then on, that was 9 year ago so its been stored in a garage since. hope somebody can help. warm regards mark:)
October 23, 200520 yr I would try and find a stock ECU for it and see if that fixes the problem. Not to many early Soobs have had the ECU chipped from my knowledge.
October 23, 200520 yr Author Hi, the car came with 3 other ecu's, all the same fault codes, thanks for your quick reply, regards mark
October 23, 200520 yr Hi, the car came with 3 other ecu's, all the same fault codes, thanks for your quick reply, regards mark Can you really guarantee that all of them haven't had the same thing tried on 'em? I'd say get one from a wrecking yard that you know to be stock. FYI - Code 31 is Throttle Sensor, and Code 22 is for the Knock Sensor. For what it's worth.
October 23, 200520 yr Personally, I would test and/or clean the sensors causing the codes... Bad/dirty throttle sensor could easily cause the driveability problems you are currently having.
October 23, 200520 yr A TPS not functioning properly will create the problem you have. The TPS could be out of adjustment, the wiring harness could have corrosion, or the TPS could be junk.
October 23, 200520 yr its not the TPS, its the idle stop switch, yeah its part of the TPS but if you unplug it it will work just find. had that problem on one of my turbo wagons. it has been unpluged for about 4 years now with no problem. the ilde stop switch dropes the idle down when it is less than 15%. the ecu is thinking that the throtle is closed. because the stop switch is shorted. but the rpms are running up. so it cuts fuel at 2500rpm. it is the connector that comes off of the TPS. three wires. black white and red. if it is the same thing i had, this will fix it.

Hi Guys Sorry for the lack of, but whats the TPS and where's the idle stop switch, the other problem re the 3 ecu's is that there are only 20 XT coupe's left in the UK, i have 2 but the other one is a 90 model and it has a different ecu. really appriciate all the time youl all have taken to respond. Many thanks Mark

October 24, 200520 yr follow the air intake hose to where it bolts to the intake manifold...rubber/plastic tube bolts to the metal engine intake. here you'll find the throttle position sensor.
