Just bought a new 2006 Outback. WOW. I'm hooked. Put 1000 miles on the first week. Can't get enough.

 

One of you Soobie nuts who are obsessed as I'm becoming must know how to SHUT THIS !@#$ Seatbelt alarm off. Dealer says against the law to shut it off or tell me how. Maybe, Maybe not. But there is always other ways.

 

There are times when I just can't wear it even most of the time I do.

I'm no lawyer, but disabling the alarm would be defeating a safety device. Your insurance company may prohibit that, and for all I know it might even be illegal.

 

Defeating the chime would be simple, but don't do it. Crashing the car without a seatbelt is Bad For You. So wear a seatbelt all the time. And if there's some bizarre reason you can't wear a seatbelt, then buckle the seatbelt in and sit on top of it.

There is a weird on off way of doing it ... let me see if i can find the way of doing it. Its a luducrously complicated method of on of's if i remeber correctly.

The seatbelt chime can be turned off by the user. Just turn the key to the

ACC position and begin buckling and unbuckling the seat belt as soon as the

chimes start. Remember to wait until the seatbelt icon stops blinking before

unbuckling. Repeat twenty buckle/unbuckle repetitions and remove the key.

The chimes should be disabled the next time you start the engine. The

process seems to be finicky so you may need to repeat it several times

before it takes hold.

Not a joke i can give you the original source if you want (once my email puter kicks in).... its touchy, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Otherwise you just live with it.

 

 

I only joke iif it envlovles slaughtering a small animla and chanting over the engine computer on a full moon with ans easterly wind....

It occurs to me that there is no good reason to not wear your seatbelt. Pardon my french, but you'd be a Dumb @$$ to not wear it.

First - it isn't a joke, I just did it in my '06 WRX wagon.

 

It will not disable the initial chime - just the repeat chiming.

 

I used the 'on' postion. dunno if ACC works or not.

 

I did the buckle/unbuckle starting immediately after switching to the 'on' (not starting though) position. I probably did it over 20 times in under 30 seconds, confriming that the warning light in the gauge cluster went off each time. It helps to sit on part of the belt after pulling it all the way out or otherwise prevent the retraction spring from pulling on you during the procedure. I postioned my right hand on the release button and concentrated left hand duties for insertion and 'catching' the tab when ejected after pressing the release button. I HAVE read of folks trying multiple times to get it to work. Perhaps I was just lucky. haven't tried it on the wife's '03 OBW so I don't know what years' cars this is effective on.

I did the seat belt repetitive chime disable routine on my 06 outback and it worked. Chimes once. That's it. Life is good. And quiet.

I just had to repeat this on my 2006 outback after a dealer reset

 

So with the seatbelt disconnected, switch key to ON position, then begin

the 20 insert/remove procedure, After unclicking the last time, turn the key forward and start the car before switching it off.

 

That did it for me but it took 2 attempts...

 

I wear the belt while driving but having that darn alarm disabled

definitely is the secret to lifelong happiness and well-being.... Ha!

Worked on my 06 Outback first attempt, yea!

 

There are times when I'm in my car with it running and i'm not wearing my seatbelt. Example, my wife and I are taking a break and she's nursing my son and we got the a/c on....don't need to wear a seatbelt in the parking lot.

Yeah, I did this on my 06 Legacy when I had it. The seat belt chime is so freaking annoying!

 

Just an FYI for those folks that haven't owned a newer Subie, the seatbelt chime goes off if you just sitting there parked with the engine on. I agree you should definitely wear your seatbelt, but if you're doing some testing or other type stuff where the engine is running and the car is sitting there, you want to rip out the seat belt chime....that's how annoying it is

I did this on my baja too. That chime is bad enough to make a man want to return the thing to the dealer and get a refund! Why, oh why does it need to chime when its running and in park?

My '02 OBW is the same as yours. I guess we are the lucky ones that get to enjoy a few short, quiet dings, and then not have to be annoyed.

 

I'm sure it changed at least in '05+ in US Legacy's/OB's.
