rear end hum noise 2005 Outback

Featured Replies

I have a 2005 Outback Sedan with 7500 miles on it. After I went through a car wash I started to notice a humming noise from the back wheel area. The hum starts at about 30 and will stop if I reach 70. Its driving me nuts.

Could this be a problem with the tires being worn or did the car wash husrt something?

Unless something abnormal happened at the car wash it seems unlikely not to be a coincidence. I suppose it's POSSIBLE you picked up a screw or bolt or something in a rear tire - or ran over the 'bump-stop' in such a way to tear a rear boot. Maybe a fender liner was loose anyway, and if the wash had an undercarriage spray, it could knock the liner or other plastic piece loose that is vibrating now. I dunno. Probably only a close inspection back there on a lift will find the problem. make sure they inspect the wheel bearings and emergency brake too while they're under there.

Thank you for your post. There is no vibrating. I looked under and can see no tear in the boots. Maybe a baring like you have said.

The car is too new to need a barring at 7500 miles :(

Well, if it does have a bad berring, then Subaru should pay for it at that milage, as it is clearly defective. This all started at a carwash? really strange. You may also look around the propeller shaft to see if any of the heat shields may have come loose

If it were installed incorrectly at assembly - I could certainly understand it failing this soon. It may be something simple though I can't think what at the moment.

Please let us know what you discover OK?

thanx

First thing to do is check the tires, you may have a belt seperation that may not be showing up in the seat of your pants. Rotate the tires and see if it moves to the front of the car.

Give it a shot

Hey thanks.

I will take in in to the dealer and then post back what they said.

Hello,

The problem was a left rear baring was bad. It took them about 40 minutes to replace it and do a 7,500 miles serivce. Apparently, the dealer said some of the 05 and 06 Outbacks were having baring problems.

Problem solved, case closed, noise is history.

Did they put OEM grease back in? Chances are the berrings were good, the grease to make it last, isn't, killing the berring. I found this prob on old soobs, synthetic grease liberally apllied went for another decade.OEM was a quick factory application of grease, and not a high grade.
