Oil filler neck gasket?

Featured Replies

95 LS 2.2L auto, I have an oil leak which appears to be from where the oil filler neck bolts to the valve cover. Oil is only leaking in tha area does not appear to be the valve cover gasket as there is oil above this location, but not above where the neck bolts to the cover.

I've tried the usual place like 1stsubaruparts but all the have is the valve cover or compete engine gaskets.

Any idea where I can get just this gasket? Can I simply use RTV silicone gasket or should I start comparing to thermostat gaskets to modify one to fit?

You can get gasket material at most auto parts stores. I would probably just make one and use a bit of silicon seal. I keep the material in stock as I hate to drive to the auto store in the middle of a job. You can cut it with an Exacto knife. Or tap around the the part with the ball of a ball peen hammer. Scissors cut the shape out pretty well.I have been amazed at what you can seal with just silicon seal also.

WAIT!

There isn't supposed to be a gasket here. There is a o-ring on the filler neck, where it reaches into the valve cover.

Undo the two bolts, pull the neck up and all will be revealed.

Don't repeat my mistake..:-)

Really? On my EA82, it is just a gasket, and it's a sort of funny one too. It isn't just the large 3cm diameter hole, but a meshwork of little 4mm holes in the middle for the oil to go through.

Even if it is an O ring with luck you can match one up at a hardware store or auto parts store as they usually have a selection here. If not clean and reinstall with silicon sealer and let it cure before operating.

One Christmas Eve on a bus trip from CA to NYC I broke a bypass line in Missouri. This was a steel line about 1 inch in diameter that went to a flat bolt on fitting sort of like an exhaust manifold hook up. I found a guy that let me use his torch to weld the end of the line back on. I filed the fitting to make sure it was as flat as I could get it and installed the two bolts using only silicon sealer on the fitting. That was all I had and I had 44 people waiting so I fired it up as soon as I filled and bled the engine and heater sytem and hoped.

We not only made New york but that was still on the bus when I sold it several years later. I think it is fair to say that I was impressed with the stuff.

Our 93 had a cracked filler tube at the base where it went into the valve cover. The filler tube from Subaru comes with the o-rings.

It's an "O" ring. Any Subaru dealer should have this in stock. I think I paid around 6 bucks US for my last one.

Don't go to the dealer. I got an O ring from a local Carquest for $0.69. I brought my filler neck in with me, and the counterman found a suitable o-ring in his hardware drawer, and even installed it.
