Automatic transmission filter ?

Featured Replies

While underneath my 2000 Outback trying to find the coolant leak, I noticed sticking out of the side of the automatic transmission just above the pan, was what looked like an oil filter.

I tried to find info on it in the owner's and maintenance manuals, but couldn't. Does this need changed? If so, how often.

Thanks folks!

Sounds like the same type of filter in my '03 Forester. Subaru says it doesn't ever need to be changed, but I changed mine anyway at about 65K when I replaced the AT fluid. It's a dealer part, or you can order it from one of the Subaru parts websites.

Yeah, Subaru claims it's there just to catch junk after final assembly of the tranny. Howver, I think replacing it after a high mileage service (or anytime the transmission has been 'opened' or power flushed, etc.) couldn't hurt anything and might just catch some varnish or inadvertent hunk of crap that got in off the dipstick or something. I dunno

they make it that easy to replace, i would replace it
