Third Eye Trouble

Featured Replies

I got my third eye working on the Brat, but the motor that moves the light cover seems to be worn or broken. The light will come on, but the hood stays shut. It DOES seem to hit my grill a little, but it still does not open when the grille is off. What can be done to fix it? Does anyone have pics of where the motor is and how to replace it? I have not looked into it too deeply yet, but it is something to tackle soon.

I have done the conversion to my hatch, I took all that motor and shield off, I just used the whole bracket it was on and took off the olf bracket, cut out in my grill peice and wired it up on a toggle. Its so bright!!! good luck

Heres what I have to offer picture wise:

Thats all I can seem to fit in my album (Did they suddenly get smaller?). You can't see it in this picture, but the motor is right behind the bumper and operates a rod that opens the door for the 3rd eye. Check to see that the rod isn't catching on anything thru its range of motion.

WHAT is a 3rd eye? Does my '85 Brat have one??

The third eye is a passing lamp. Your brat shouldn't have one unless someone was very creative before you bought it. I believe They were offered only in 81 and 82 model years. The third eye only operates with the high beams on. Look at carfreak85's post you can see it in the grille there. Is the hood motor the big round thing lower on the third eye?

Had problems with the motor on the one in my '82 BRAT. Didn't have the dash switch, so I ws trying to wire-in a control switch for it. Anyways, I could get door to open, and light to work, couldn't get door to close though. So I pulled the works out. Thinking there's 4 bolts at the top of the radiator support, and one down lower, but it's been like 3 years since I did that, so....

What I found was one of the wires had broken off where it attaches on the motor. The connection is a solder joint, so I just re-solder it. Works fine now, or did. Haven't drove BRAT in a while, as it's down for other repairs.

Another possible problem would be the relay that controls the light/motor. Relay on mine is on the PS strut tower, Black in color and fairly big.

Or just do like the PO of my hatch did, take the door out and put a piece of a BBQ grill over it.

BTW, mine works when the low beams or high beams are on, but not when the lights are off.

Mine too.

Hey, anyone got a step-by-step of how to put a third eye in an EA82?

Has it been done?
