Power steering..?

Featured Replies

i have an ea81 and was wondering if it would be at all possiable to slap on an ea82 power steering pump..? or does the ea81 only work with the ea81 powersteering pump..?

The only way u will be able to do it is to make sure all the hoses and wire r the right connectors and lengths and the pumps r very simular.

I would save yourself the headaches and just find a pump, mounts and all the hoses for an EA81. They are entirely different beasts so im sure it would be a PITA to swap a pump from an EA82 in. Just my 2 cents.

if it is not an EA81-turbo, I doubt it is possible, because the belt routing is COMPLETELY different and so are the pumps, however if it is an EA81-turbo, I think it is possible

Actually, yes - it's been done. The pump will bolt in, you just have to figure out the belt situation - the alt is used as the tensioner in the EA82, so you may need to measure and find a belt the right size. Just a V belt tho so shouldn't be hard at all. Measure with some string.

Might need to find or fabricate the mount for the pump from an EA81T tho....

If you're thinking about kludging an EA82 pump on there, why not just save yourself the trouble and leave the pump out completely? Although my '84GL had a power steering pump, it was disconnected (no belt, no hoses). Still seemed to work fine.

Um.... because it wouldn't be "power" steering then would it? Power is awesome for off-roading with lifted soobs. Much superior to manual.

Not a kludge either - the EA82 pump is the same as the EA81 turbo pump, so not all that strange to consider doing this.
