ARGH! EA81 oilpump STUCK!

Featured Replies

I'm just about done tearing this EA81 solid lifter engine down for a complete reseal and SPFI unit. But I ran into a problem trying to get this oilpump out. It won't budge! I got it to rotate back and forth only a little but that was finessing it with a hammer a bit (on the old oil filter). By hand, psh good luck trying to get it to budge at all. Yes, all 4 bolts are out and it should wiggle enough to move, but it doesn't. Never had a oil pimp be so stubborn to get out! What should I do?

Wiggle, and pry on it just a bit while it's turning. That should get it moving. Definately want to replace it since it's obviously been in there for way too long. Don't pry on the mating surface, just on the bit right before the filter. It may break into little peices, and you'll have to dig them out.

If it's really stubborn you can loosen the bolts to the crank case halves around the pump area and lightly smack the area with a dead blow soft hammer to dislodge the pump.

ok I'll have to try the block trick since I've pryed on it in a few different spots with no avail. This engine though only has 100,000 miles on it form a '81 2wd wagon....

The one EA81 oil pump I've removed... ended up using two pry-bars to 'pry' it out. It took hardly any force at all, and was more the effect of being pulled straight out than large amounts of force.

If you are going to rebuild the engine just wait until you split the case. It will fall out.

but thats the thing, I'm not planning on splitting the case cause I've never been into a shortblock before, plus, I don't have the right tools to do it.

sounds like the one i fought in my brat.. mine started out as being a pita like yours.. then it broke off in the block.. then the radiator and a chisel came into play to get the chunks out.. after that the new pump was $100+ and she's back on the road..

be very careful unless you want an even bigger headache..

It has been my experience that they don't like to come out.

I had to pry on my pump to get it out and broke that stupid mounting plate:mad:

It will be stubborn but try to not touch that stupid plate as your prying.....

Good Luck,

Hey buddy, I've run into this numeroustimes as well - do you need to keep the pump?? or do you have a spare to toss in there?..... I had the chipping-off thing happen after I tried all the other ways of getting it out that did not work. I ended up drilling/tapping holes using old-H20pump bolts/some washers and a steering wheel puller. came RIGHT out with that trick. Its not like the crank is going anywhere. Have some pics online if you want to see them. Later bro.

well I got it after some finessing with a couple screwdrivers, a half hour and a BFH. I did however break that piece that goes into the pump with is also like a spacer between the pump and the block. Lucky for me, I got like EA81s comin outta my butt!

Buy a new one - it's well worth the $60 for good oil pressure. Killed my wagon engine because I didn't change the pump - only 165k on it when it blew a rod. Too much swamp water and bad oil pressure.
