What Trans for FT4WD or AWD into EA81 Hatch

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm trying to figure out my options for putting a 5spd full time 4WD or all wheel drive transmission into an EA81 Hatchback. I need to know if there's a tranny that will work with my stock EA81 front axles (forget about the engine part of the equation for the moment, I've got that part covered ;)). I know this rules out an RX tranny or any New Gen trans.

So other than that, all I can think of is a Loyale trans or possibly XT6 AWD trans (not sure of the spline count on those). Also what are the differences between these trannies?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

XT6's have the same spline count as turbo trannys. 25 spline. You might be able to find a FT4wd s/r XT that is NA but I dunno if they ever made those. That would possibly have a 23 spline axle. If anything, you can change the DOJs on your axles to a 25 spline and if you get a XT6 tranny, it will be a 3.90 final drive.

Thanks for the info on the XT6 tranny, but I searched and found some more stuff out: I guess you can't swap 25 spline EA82 or New Gen DOJs onto EA81 axles. But cvaxles.com can make a 25 spine EA81 axle for you.

So that's probably what I will do. That opens up my options a lot, but I will probably still look for an XT6 trans for the 3.9 final drive. What years should I look for or are they all the same?

i am pretty sure that all the 3 model years for xt6 are the same tranny if it is full time 4wd, and plus you get a locking diff.:headbang:

There are two types of EA81 axles - different DOJ joint spline on the shaft. The 2WD EA81 axle shaft will take an EA82 DOJ.... at least the 23 spline ones..... the 4WD shaft might take a 25 spline DOJ. there is a combination that will work you just have to figure it out. You can also probably get one of the axle companies like Ocala to send you just the joint parts and put them on yourself.

Any new info on this topic? Will 25 spline DOJs fit on 4WD EA81 front and rear axles?
