5speed dual range trannys

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is in the right spot or not, but at the Olympia PAP next to the Olympia Air Feild, there are about 4-6 Subaru's that have 5speed dual range trannys. I have no idea if they are any good or not, but at least the INFO is on the board.

So whats so great about the 5 speeds? I know they have slightly better low range. But the top gear would be useless in my Brat, it's 4th already goes faster then the tires are rated...

i went from a 4 spd to a 5spd and get a better top end.i am not so wound out going up hills ,get better acceleration.i have 27 inch tires and a weber which help as well.in my 4 spd i found that i was struggling to get to speed on the freeway .with the 5 spd i can accelerate even in 5th.i can maintain about 65 mph going up 6% grades in 4th at about 3500 rpms.huge bonus.

I'll have to drive my brothers 83 wagon more. See, I have a dual carb ea81, not just the carbs, but also the better flow heads. So maybe that makes my car powerful enough in 4t. Normally I can keep over 90km/h (about 55mph) on hilly roads. I thought in the 5sp boxes 1,2,3 gears were the same, fourth a little shorter, and fith fair bit above 4sp's fourth.

The biggest benefit is for people who have pushbutton (single range) 5 speeds. They pick up the low range, which really helps offroad.

The last time I bought a Subaru tranny at PaP, they tried to charge me extra for the "transfer case." I told them to go ahead and take if off, if they could.
