dirty fuel tank

Featured Replies

How do you clean your dirty gas tank? I've just been draining the fuel and blowing compressed air through the lines. I'm thinking of removing the tank and really clean it out with kerosene.

Might as well find another one and clean that first - then just swap them. Will improve your downtime by a lot, and you may find the old tank has a lot of rust and scale. If the car spent some time in the midwest or east it may be nasty inside. Most radiator shops can clean them out real well too if you bring it in. It's a nasty, nasty job to remove them. Working overhead, and the years of crap on the top of the tank plus all the lines and the filler tube. Have to remove the rear end to get to it as well. I would rather pull 5 engines than 1 fuel tank.

I have three vehicles, so three tanks. One vehicle has diff swapped out into another, so that'll be the easiest. Other vehicle needs seals on swapped diff, so I'll pull the tank when I pull the diff.

when I cleaned tanks at the radiator shop, I used the power washer for inside and out, and if needed, they went in the boil out tank, then power washed again
