October 27, 200322 yr Hey guys, I was thinking about swapping my carb'ed ea81 for an injected subee motor... I'm not looking to get to exotic, no turbo. I'ed be happy with around 120hp. This would be in my 4-speed 87Brat. I'm looking for good low end torque.... Any motors that would bolt up to my transmission? Motor mount issues? front C.V. axel allignment/compatablility issues?, if I had to use another tranny Thanks all..............
October 27, 200322 yr EA82 MPFI with spider intake out of an 87.5-91 XT. I've seen one of these running in a Brat, and I know EA82's can be made to work in a Brat. I know the trans can be made to work, as bratsrus has mated an EA82 trans to an EA81 engine... why wouldn't it work the other way around? That engine has about 100hp stock, but it feels pretty peppy. It was pretty decent on low end torque; I could spin tire in first gear in my 2WD XT without even trying, and chirp 2nd from time to time. And I'm sure it can easily be made to hit 120hp. This engine felt like worlds of difference compared to my SPFI EA82.
October 27, 200322 yr Originally posted by Salvage Brat I'm in Northern Calf, any idea on how common those motors are? EVERY nonturbo 4 cylinder XT made from 87.5 to 91 has them. It's the base XT motor. Shouldn't be hard to find.
October 27, 200322 yr ea82 bolts up to ea81 tranny, but there will be very little clearance in the front as the ea82 motors are wider. You may also have to deal with moving the radiator. Also there is the wiring of the computer and fuel injection, and all the vacuum hoses etc. With some work and some money you can get 110-120 out of your ea81 motor. Put a weber 32/36, an exhaust, and ea82 pistons and you're getting close. You can get a cam regrind too. And you'll still have a nice and simple engine.
October 27, 200322 yr Author Dare I say it, but I'll like to stay legal, I really don't want to tear into my motor when the smog test time comes around again. I've done that before... and it worked out, but re-assembling vacume network is a pain---- And I have an effinity for wires over rubber hose....
October 27, 200322 yr ea82 mpfi is pretty good for the 80s. or you could just slap an spfi computer and wiring on your ea81 block. no more screwin around with crappy carbs! all you realy need is an o2 sensor in your exhaust
October 27, 200322 yr You could do the MPFI swap with the VW Injection. The VW injection unit is very simple with very few inputs. You would need a pair of turbo heads. The you could keep the EA81 and have a simple F/I setup. This would allow you keep most of you stock wiring and stuff. There is a right up somewhere.
October 27, 200322 yr EA82 FWD tranny is the exact same (except gearing ratios) as an EA81 FWD tranny. (4 and 5 speeds) Only things that chance between mounting them to the motors is the clutch disk, and flywheel, ect. With the right clutch disk and flywheel, you could easily make an EA81 FWD tranny work on an EA82 engine swap... or use an EA81 FWD tranny in an EA82 car. Axles have same spline count, just the EA82 ones are longer.
October 27, 200322 yr same deal with the 4wd tranny. You just have to keep the ea82 pressure plate mated with the ea81 clutch disk or something along those lines.
