So, the other day I wrote a post about the tragic end of my parcel tray. Well, today is a glorious day because it has been saved. My savior was Brenda Parkin, Chief Designer for Nissan's Color and Materials. She is a real sweetheat, and if you like her handy work, hit her up and tell her so at her myspace account;

Here is how you too can save your crumbly, ratty, stained, paper parcel tray in less than an hour.

 

1. Remove it veeeeery carefully.

2. Clean with a lint free rag and acetone (again, be verrrry careful and light on the acetone- this is just to get rid of any oils)

3. Color match or pick a close color (we used Dupont Vinyl paints because they age well in the sun)

4. Dust one coat very lightly.

5. Let dry to the touch (still tacky) and remove any left over lint with latex gloves.

6. Apply, 2-3 heavier coats- this will keep the original texture intact.

7. Smile- you've just saved a peice of history!

hmm now that you have it fixed what have you learned.

Ha ha! I hear ya boys... But the place that's doing the work is one we normally use for cars that are going into museums (mine's not.) They are giving me a substantial discount so I can't pass it up...

 

I'm unable to do most of the things they do, like removing engines to clean the bay, powder coating parts, or disasembling doors to get at the inner jams to clean and check for hidden rust... I can fix the little mistakes they make from time to time...

 

I'll post pics of the car soon - Its truly amazing what they've done to it.

Lesson learned... when you're using a cleaner, rejuvenator, or anything else... when in doubt, try it on a hidden spot and let it lay for a week or a month under normal conditions. Then try a small spot in the sun. Mink oil and Lemon Pledge furniture polish seems to be the best for rejuvenating most plastics, and it lasts without reapplication.

 

Never, ever use Armoral on OLDER plastics, foam based items or rubber!
