2WD M/T EA81 to EA82?

Featured Replies

My 5 speed M/T is on it's last leg (fits my EA82 '88 Loyale Wagon.), really growling when I let off the gas, ect, ect,...over 250K miles on it.

I may have located a 2WD Manual Transaxle from an EA81 and was wondering if it is a direct bolt up replacement or if I needed any mods for it to fit. Also, is the EA81 Tranny a 4 or 5 speed?

Thanks!

Depends - they made both 4 speed and 5 speed 2WD EA81 trannys. You'll have to run it through the gears and check. If it's a 5 speed, it's the same trans as the EA82 - they never changed them.

The STD hatch had a 4 speed 2WD tranny. Weirdest thing. Of course those were stock with an EA71, but we often refer to them as the "EA81" by body type. He didn't say what it came from so I'm assuming he doesn't know. Would be hard to tell as the later STD hatch's had the side mount starter and all.... still a 4 speed 2WD though I think (or some were 4 speed, single range 4WD apparently).

I'd like to see this.

Even 2WD EA71 trannies were 5spd.

Not all, back in the days when I was working at Mt. Tech we had a couple of EA71 2wd 4speeds on the shelf. If you were to sit a EA71 2wd 4speed next to an EA71 5speed you can tell the difference between them. The casting of the rear cover is shaped different on a 5speed to make room for the 5th gear.
