Really? Well i guess u could make a custom mount thats sets the mounts back as many inches as you need.

On every Sub I have worked on (90 - 02) it has been a 14mm socket, and a 16mm socket (that last for the seatbelt retractors that you will not have to deal with)

4 14 mm bolts connect the rails to the body. They're underneath some plastic beauty pieces. From there its a mixture of bolts and screws. (I disasembled mine recently)

OK I have to ask... how tall are you?

 

I'm 6'4" and fit in my 97 just fine, it's better than a lot of mid sized domestic cars in that respect. Haven't spent much time in the newer ones though.

well...I am 6'1 and I think its a 2 fold problem...I am really not happy with the width of area where your feet go....plus my right leg/knee hits the consol....and my legs are bent...for a long drive I would like at least 2 more inches.....then I will be home free!!!

be careful when you unplug the connections underneath the seat, those seats will have pyrotechnic retractors, and side air bags, so be sure to disconnect the battery first and wait a half an hour.

since you can't drive it without the seat, i'd either practice with the passenger seat or one from a junker. i saw a late model legacy at the salvage yard and it appears to bolt on the same as the mid 90's.

 

i'd practice with changing the legs (support/mounting brackets). cutting them off and extending them. if you find a solution then i'd look at swapping the seat cushions. if you have electric or heated seats then you probably need to find the exact match.

 

or you could just drive it a few months and get used to it..

I've had the same problem with my 05' Legacy, but then I am 6'3". Plus my Legacy is also a base model... The 2.5i used for Dealer demo's and rental companies. It has cloth seats and is only manualy adjustable. If any one had taken a long ride in one of these, you know the seats aren't exactly built for comfort. I've been to a couple of upholstery shops and they couldn't believe where the wire is placed across the center of the seat back... after a long trip it makes your back numb... They also have a manual hight adjustment, unfortunately, when you raise the seat up it moves forward at the same time.. Then you look like Larry Bird driving an MG Midget, it's really rather comical..

 

So, as to moving the seat back farther. I've gone to the dealer and sat in every subaru there. I found that the full electric seats, (at least the leather ones) actually slide back a little farther, not much mind you maybe an inch. But then every bit helps. The electric seat also gives you 8 adjustment options, those being, Up, Down, Forward, Back, tilt up front, tilt up back, and seat back forward and back. if you move the seat all the way back, tilt the front of the seat up, it can be quite comfortable. just raising the front up adjust your legs so they feel more comfortable. We just took a trip in my car and I stuffed a small pillow under my thighs on the front edge of the seat, It helps. so you could have an upholstery place adjust the cushions in your seat most will actually have you there so they can make the adjustments to fit you. (and it's cheaper then buy a full seat.)

 

But for optimum room, look at the WRX STI, they have a sparco racing seat, that is quite comfortable.. great seating position, they are moved further back in the car than the normal impreza seats, you just have to get use to the side and leg bolsters. To set the seat back further they didn't modify the floorpan on the car they made different seat mounting hardware. It should be adaptable to the legacy seat according to the Service manager. (not the seat track itself, just the adapters that it mounts to.)

 

I've also talked to a couple of auto customizers that say they can adapt the sti seats to a legacy for about $25 a seat. However the 2007 Legacy GT spec B gets Leather trimmed sparco seats made just for the legacy, so it might be worth waiting for the new GT and ordering seats for it.you'll need the help of a dealer to do this as you need a vin number to order the seats.... At least that's the way my dealer does it... (but they are really nice and let me go copy down a vin number when I wan't to order something.) It's worth checking out.
