August 28, 200619 yr I have a 1991 Loyal wagon and need a new rear window, headlight, rack n pinion and wheels. I have a chance to buy a 1986 subaru wagon (GL, I think) parts car and wondering if the parts are interchangeable? Is there a site to find out this information or does anyone know? Thanks, Kididaho in CA
August 28, 200619 yr heh, provided that the intake and driveline are the same, its my understanding that virtually everything will be either identical, or interchangeable... Some parts might need to stay grouped together if you go from one to another (different brand AC compressors might need to have the bracket and mounting hardware transferred along with, etc) but they are essentially the same car. apparently it was always known as the loyale outside the US.
August 28, 200619 yr Intake/Ignition/ECU are different, some electricals are different (dashclock has a different connector). Rear hatch window and rear quarter windows are different. Major mechanicals and most bodywork is interchangeable.
August 29, 200619 yr why is the ignition etc different? i mean, is the 86 a carb'd model or something? i thought my post was correct, and then lookitthat, im made to look like a dummy :- ) what are the differences, or does my statement "as long as the intake and driveline are the same" stand? (IE not both SPFI vehicles...?)
August 29, 200619 yr AFAIK, SPFI was not available in 86. The distributor should be the mechanical-and-vacuum-advance kind, not the later CAS-only disty.
August 29, 200619 yr cool, thanks for the info. i actually just saw my first carbed EA82 in the junkyard today, i couldnt open the door to tell the year though. it had a checkered grille tho, and i nabbed it. i suppose its not a TOTAL thread jack to ask if i might be able to buy the little plastic retainer clips that the older grille screwed into as opposed to my newer setup, with the still plastic two piece screw rivet things?? the mounting points are there inside the frame for either style of grille, but i dont have the clips, they broke trying to remove them :- /
August 29, 200619 yr AFAIK, SPFI was not available in 86. The distributor should be the mechanical-and-vacuum-advance kind, not the later CAS-only disty. It actually was - I thought the same till I ran across an 86 2WD GL-10 sedan at Foster the other day. SPFI - it was a little weird as far as wiring and such, but it was all there, and original. No vac can or anything. I still have doubts about 85 tho. I have seen an MPFI 85 2WD wagon though, so I think the SPFI replaced the MPFI in 86 as the standard for the 2WD high end non-turbo.... GD
August 29, 200619 yr AFAIK, SPFI was not available in 86. The distributor should be the mechanical-and-vacuum-advance kind, not the later CAS-only disty. I thought my '86 GL-10 Turbo twins (MT/AT) both had the EA-82T SPFI motors.
August 29, 200619 yr I thought my '86 GL-10 Turbo twins (MT/AT) both had the EA-82T SPFI motors. Turbo's are not SPFI, they are MPFI Turbo. GD
August 29, 200619 yr Cool... another member from Sacramento! The body parts will fit. Most of the engine parts are interchangeable as is the interior pieces. -Brian
August 29, 200619 yr Author Cool... another member from Sacramento! The body parts will fit. Most of the engine parts are interchangeable as is the interior pieces. -Brian How about the glass? I am most interested in the rear hatch window. Maybe I could just switch the whole hatch? Would that work?
August 29, 200619 yr If the '86 is a GL, it should have the dual range tranny -- stick that into the Loyale!!!
August 30, 200619 yr wait wait.. didnt he say... yah Rear hatch window and rear quarter windows are different. the glass is not the same? i wouldnt know, not a wagon owner so i dont pay attention to those little details on the few wagons i have seen in junkyards.. btw it stinks not having soobs in the boneyards near me. i think i may have said that once or twice, most of us in that situation have..
August 30, 200619 yr Just got off work, so brains/memory feel like scrambled eggs (...mmmm...), but IIRC the GLs rear hatch glass is gasketed to the hatch and the Loyale is glued. I would go out and check but it is 0-dark-thirty here. Entire hatch should interchange.
