October 1, 200619 yr I am starting to look for a new tranny for my brat, was wondering what models I can look for that will have the same tranny. Mine is in a '81 Brat EA81 with a 4Spd D/R. Any info appreciated thanks, -Kurt
October 1, 200619 yr That is true for the D/R. However, I am not sure that the '81 is the same as the rest. The linkage should be different but I am not positive as I never took the trans out of my '81.
October 1, 200619 yr Call Aarons in Seattle. Tom or Brian should know if they interchange. 206.243.4665
October 1, 200619 yr Would the 4sp D/R out of an 83 wagon work? I've got my junker parts wagon, I can pull it outta there and we'll see about getting it to ya... I have to head over to Oly in a week or three anyway, wouldn't be too much trouble just to bring it over. Lemme know if A) it will work and if you want it. It shifts well, all synchro's intact, not too much linkage slop. Decent tranny.
October 1, 200619 yr The 81 brat transmission has a different casting for the transfercase and the rear output is a little different too. If you want to swap parts between the 81 brat trans with a gen2 D/R, that can be done. It may also be possible to just make a Gen2 D/R work in a Gen1 Chassis.
October 1, 200619 yr I put an 81 GL Brat trans into a Gen 2 Brat (82) and it fit like stock. I just had to turn the 4WD linkage 90 degrees.... you'll see when you look at it. It's threaded, and turns easily. No problems with mounting. 81/82 have a different 3rd and 4th gear. They are lower than the 83/84 4 speed. GD
