November 6, 200619 yr i'm lookin for an engine project. i'm thinkin reliable 350-400bhp boosted. what would be the best engine for that? i have the time to do extensive engine work if need be. i was thinkin use the EG33. larger displacment should hit thoes #'s with less stress than others. but lets say i wanted to put it in a late 90's Impreza. major space issues? i have fab skills. or would the EJ22 be best?
November 6, 200619 yr Wouldn't the STI WRX's engine be a better place to start? It already has almost 300 horsepower. Brian M.
November 6, 200619 yr Yeah, I would think that too. However, having the extra cylinders means less stress for the same 4-cyl power output. There are a few h6 builds I've seen on nasioc, like this one. I can't really even guess how much he must have spent so far. It requires a lot of custom fabrication.
November 6, 200619 yr i'd look into the EG33. in stock form it won't accept much boost, but if you're talking about a full rebuild of the engine you could install low compression pistons. if you're looking for numbers that high it won't be a bad idea to start with a new motors, bearings and such. the EG33 has some aftermarket support, i'm sure there are numbers and figures out there for what an EG33 with a turbo will produce. stock will have to be low boost.
November 6, 200619 yr Might depend on end use too. I THINK the STi has oil squirters for under the piston for additional cooling. That might not be critical for an 1/8 or 1/4 miler though. I dunno Carl
November 6, 200619 yr If you're gonna go EJ22, get the EJ22T block its closed deck, and has piston squirters. Don't know if it can handle 400hp, but it would be the heads, and not the block that would be the limiting factor.
November 6, 200619 yr seems to me RELIABLE 400hp is gonna be easier to get outta 6 cylinders. PARTS to get 400hp will be easier to find for the 2.5 or maybe 2 liter engines I think. check out what some of the sandrail guys are doing. and of course NASIOC. I dunno - sounds like a fun project though. Carl
November 6, 200619 yr Author thats what i was thinkin. regardless of what engine i use, i plan to spend the time and do it right. get the heads ported, cams, balance and blueprint the whole motor, o-ring the block. has anyone done the closed deck mod like on this site http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1444721 ? if so, what kinda results have been seen?
November 6, 200619 yr huck just completed an EG33 swap into an XT6 - check it out over at http://www.xt6.net if you're interested. let me know if you sign up and i'll make sure you're account is verified quickly. (we have a sign up system to prevent spam). there are also a couple turbo wrx engines swaps in the XT platform over there as well. huck did all the work himself on his EG33 so he has alot to offer in terms of advice. i helped him with 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000004% of the work, i sent him a wiring connector.
November 6, 200619 yr Author i do have an account over their(same username). i was originaly planning on puting a motor like this in my XT6, but i desided i'd rather have an Impreza for it. i've read thru Huck's writeup, but i'm not sure if it'll be of much use to me. great writeup tho.
