rear output

Featured Replies

i changed the seal in my rearoutput thinking it was the cause of my leaky transmission. well turns out it wasnt but became a problem. its leaking and its a new seal. is it not pushed in far enough? or is it just a bad seal. trying to figure out asap any ideas will be appriciated

did you in any way possibly inadvertently... ahh speling sucks.... did you possibly slice or dice or dent the seal in anyway while installing it???

This is the transmission from hades - seriously the thing leaks if you just stare at it in a way it doesn't find pleasing .

Only potential for leak I could find is that rear output - it's definately comming from somewhere back there, and that seams the likely spot considering the splash coverage.

Do this - spray the whole area down with brake cleaner to get all the mess off, then run it down the road a bit and check it right away. See if you can locate the leak better that way. It was raining, and messy when I looked at it so I could be wrong. Best to double check it.

listen to GD and clean it, verify where the leak is coming from. if it is the seal then carefully install a new seal keeping in mind the following:

i'd install another one. take a look at a trans that isn't leaking and see how far the seal is seated so you don't push it too far or not enough. clean the sealing surfaces, grease the new seal and make sure it slides in slowly and straight.

also important if you're having issues - check the driveshaft for any nicks or more importanly rust on the shaft. if it was a used one or ever pulled, swapped or sat for awhile it could have pitting or other issues on the machined part that rides in the seal. might want to hit it with a very fine grit wet sand paper (like for body work type stuff - 400 grit) if there are any bad spots on the shaft.

Alec,

On that trans there are 3 openings for switches, I know you found one that lacked a switch for the previous leak source - just checking that all three openings are blocked.
