December 19, 200619 yr I did a search but no thread on this problem. 86 Ea82 4x4 wagon carbed. I just did my engine swap that went very well but I have a small problem. My charge light stays on but the gauge is on 13 except at higher RPMs then it goes up to allmost 18. The gauge goes up when I hit a bump sometimes to and the head and dash lights get brighter but then when I slow down it goes back to normal and the charge light dims some. Im sure Its a ground but the grounds I took off I put back where they came from. Oh and the parking brake light stays on dim to.
December 19, 200619 yr Author Alternator's internal rectifier is fried. Replace your alt. GD No problem I have one. But how did it fry by just taking it off and setting it aside and then putting it back on.
December 19, 200619 yr No problem I have one. But how did it fry by just taking it off and setting it aside and then putting it back on. Good question. Perhaps consult the stars, or the chicken bones, or the magic 8 ball if your tendancies are toward the somewhat foolish. As it is though, we can only conjecture on the true reason. I'm pulling for alien intervention. Have you lost any long tracts of times lately? GD

December 19, 200619 yr Author Good question. Perhaps consult the stars, or the chicken bones, or the magic 8 ball if your tendancies are toward the somewhat foolish. As it is though, we can only conjecture on the true reason. I'm pulling for alien intervention. Have you lost any long tracts of times lately? GD Yea i just lost 2 days working on this thing. It was well worth it:grin: The newer engine 1990 (180.00k) runs better then the 86 ever did! Lots more power and the pick up is out of this world. GD how much more horsepower does the 90 have then the 86 and how much did I loose putting the carb(holley 5200) on. I know I should have just did the spfi swap but dont have the funds for it at this time. Next month Im getting a 90 for a parts car so in the spring it will get done. Another reason I didnt do the swap is my y pipe dosent have the bung for the o2 senser and I dont have a way to weld one on. Thanks for the help!
December 20, 200619 yr The SPFI EA82 is rated at 90 HP, and is a bit higher reving - it's got a 500 RPM higher redline (on the guage cluster). The 86 engine would have been 82 HP. The main differences are in the valve train and compression ratio. The 90 has a 9.5:1 bottom end and the 86 was 9.0:1. Your increase in torque was all from the engine. The Holley 5200 is fine for a fuel system, and I doubt you would lose more than 1 or 2 HP without the SPFI. The big win with the SPFI is not really power, but fuel econemy, driveability, and easy to work on. GD
December 20, 200619 yr Author Changed the Alt and all is well:) Went on 60 mile round trip and the gas gauge didn't evn move. I allso seafoamed it and plan to change oil next week as it has a very slight TOD.Had to order Tstat from subaru. Wow 14 bucks. Thanks evryone for the help Big thumbs up to GD whom answered my post so fast.
