December 22, 200619 yr My 1987 GL wouldn't start this morning...put the key in, radio started, lights went on, engine growled at me! Kept growling...wouldn't purr. I thought maybe it was too cold ealier because she just started up about 15 minutes ago. I just had the valve-cover gaskets replaced, the oil changed, and a tranny-flush (automatic, if needed). Any feedback or advice would be nice. Thanks!! ~A
December 22, 200619 yr Bad starter, loose wire, or bad ground would be my first choices. When you try to crank the engine, do the headlights dim at all?
December 23, 200619 yr The growling sound to me sounds like you dont have a good connnection on your positive terminal. Check for corrosion first. Then have a friend get in the car if the corrosion thing doesn't work and try to start it by wiggling the positive around and hope that you get a good connection.
December 25, 200619 yr Author I haven't driven her since thursday, but she's starting everytime now? Thanks for all the input!! ~A
December 25, 200619 yr ... Check for corrosion first ... Its Good Idea!, also it can be on the Main Links, those are located in a small Black Box, near the Battery... Welcome! Good Luck!
January 26, 200719 yr Author I didn't do anything! When I first bought the car, It kept having problems with the starter...so it was rigged and wired directly from the battery with the guarantee it would start every time instead of "growling" at me with the annoying "ticking". We thought there might be a fuse out. Other than that I really don't know what else to describe about the situation. All I know is she's still kickin'! ~A
