while doing a timing belt job for a friend of mine i broke the cylinder off the end of that sensor behind the thermostat housing. is that the AAV or canister purge solenoid? i have to wait for a crank seal to be ordered tomorrow so i can't test drive it until i get the timing belts back on. what is this and will the car drive until i get another? i searched but since the database won't support three letter searches (AAV) it's hard to find much.

Does it have a square-ish black two prong connector? If so, that's the Purge control solenoid (PCS).

Car will run just fine without it plugged in, but will throw a CEL (35, IIRC).

Probably best to get another one somwhere; junkyard will be the cheapest. Can even find a different solenoid and swap the connector between the two.

oh yea, to search 3 letter terms, try CTS* or "CTS " (with the quotes, and extra space)

You can use foil wrap duct tape to secure the broken stem back on too.Hack job,but that stuff is super strong and you can smooth it around tightly.Worked for me on my old '86.Need to cut small strips and helps to have good dexterity or take it out and do it.

Of course,if you have a yard with old Subarus handy......
