February 17, 200719 yr i went to the auto parts store to order a cap and rotor for my 86 subie gl, the cap i got was the wrong one. they asked if my carburator was a hatache or nippendenso, apperantly its a nippendenso, is a "nd" carb the dreded feedback carb ? , the one that works like crap, which my carb does, and as luck has it, probably only used on the 86 gl any one have any similar knowledge, thanks a bunch
February 17, 200719 yr the bright side is that being that you have the denso unit, replacement parts tend to be cheaper... i have the denso distributor on my 86 d/r oh yes and make sure that you get the cap from the california model, it will have the much smaller tabs on it that you likely have
February 17, 200719 yr There's no such thing as an "ND" carb. They were all Hitachi carbs. Feedback models were equipped with both types of distributors. The distributor style usually indicates 2WD or 4WD. Also there's nothing wrong with the ND distributors. In fact I (and the aircraft community) like them better. GD
February 18, 200719 yr ND distributors came in 4wds. From my experience they where common on late 86's and most 87's. I personally like the servicability of the Hitachi Distributors better. too bad they aren't plug and play interchangable.
February 18, 200719 yr There's no such thing as an "ND" carb. ... GD That is True, as Far as I knew. No "ND" Carbs. on Subies, or At Least, I didn´t see one, never.
February 18, 200719 yr too bad they aren't plug and play interchangable. They are 100% interchangabe. You just have to change to the corresponding coil, and make sure you hookup the vac can properly. GD
February 18, 200719 yr They are 100% interchangabe. You just have to change to the corresponding coil, and make sure you hookup the vac can properly. GD There is a totally different wiring setup? You would need to rewire to along with swapping the Coils. Believe me I tried. It was a long time ago but there are some wiring differences. This can be obsevred in the FSM for 87
February 18, 200719 yr Maybe it's different on the EA81s, but I put a 4wd disty in a 2wd EA82 last year with no problems. I didn't know that the coils were different, I just happened to swap that out too in order to eliminate that possibility. Plugged off the extra vacuum line and it was ok. I may have had to change some wires, but I really can't remember at this point. Whatever it was, it wasn't a big deal, and I had it done in a couple hours.
February 19, 200719 yr There is a totally different wiring setup? You would need to rewire to along with swapping the Coils. Believe me I tried. It was a long time ago but there are some wiring differences. This can be obsevred in the FSM for 87 Perhaps you are thinking of the FI distributors. All carb distributors have just two wires to the coil. GD
February 19, 200719 yr The difference in distributor rotors are if it is an ND or Hitachi distributor. I believe the caps are interchangeable. The parts guy has his distributors and carburetors mixed up. Now that's a boost for confidence!!
February 19, 200719 yr Cap's are not interchangable, and I'm pretty sure the rotor's aren't either. GD
February 19, 200719 yr Cap's are not interchangable, and I'm pretty sure the rotor's aren't either. GD What's different about them? The last time I picked one up the parts guy brought out a 2wd and 4wd listing and they were they same as far as my four eyes could tell.
February 19, 200719 yr They are very close, but there's little "notches" in the housing of the disty (to keep it from rotating), and on the Hitachi they are smaller - such that the caps won't interchange. It's hard to notice just from looking at the cap though. GD
February 19, 200719 yr Author cool.... thanks to all for the reply, ill definitly keep the denso dist, i am sure ill have to get a webber carb soon, my idle is all over the place, it runs good when warm...thanks to the subaru gods... ...rock on
