Driveshaft needs removal and fuse question??

Featured Replies

the driveshaft from a '01 outback needs to be removed and while the shaft is out of the car, will a "fuse" have to be added or will it be Ok just to drive the vehicle as is, until the shaft is returned

i don't think you can remove the whole shaft and drive the car, the front section of the shaft slides into a seal on the rear end of the (auto?) trans, fluid will leak out i think. the rear section you can remove and drive on.

In an auto you will leak everywhere, so he is correct.

I also agree I think it would leak at back of transmission, Why are you removing the driveshaft? I am on my fourth one but my Subaru has been used for stop and go mail del. for the last eleven years. I have not heard of anyone else here having to replace one but I dont check the board ever day so I may have missed someone else driveshaft problems. I was wondering if you were also using yours for some kind of del. service. And if you are taking it out to be replaced they are pricey I paid a little over five hundred for my last one.

my friend was experienceing some vibration and we thought one of the ways to narrow down the problem would be to remove the driveshaft and see if the vibration would disappear...if it will leak from the front, then another plan of action will be taken...it worked for my vw vanagon with this method of removal, but then again it had flanges on each side if the shaft...Thanks....

Wlel you dont have to remove it to say if its the driveshaft. A physicla insepction of the universal joints and the carrier bearing will tell you rather quickly if that is the source.

I agree with Nipper. very easy to check. just look for any "free motion" in the universal joints. Also....A tell tell for drive shafts is it will vibrate worse when the vehicle is free wheeling instead of accelerating.

while driving put in nuetral and just free wheel..no restistance in drive line and a universal joint will shake your teeth out.
