Toyota 20R into a 1987 Subaru Wagon

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this being done before? I would like to know as much as possible about this conversion, if it's even possible. I am planning on hooking up a 20R Toyota motor to my stock EA82 tranny and running gear. I would love suggestions and help, if anyone has any.

The biggest question is why? Do you really think the Soob needs that much weight added over the front wheels?

Why would be a good question... the Toyota engine will be heavier and probably thirstier. On the other hand you won't need to pull the engine to do headgaskets, and they're just as reliable. I think the 20R makes about the same HP, probably a little more torque. If I were to put in a Toyota plant, I'd just use a good old solid axle RWD/PT4WD setup. Not many people here have had much success hooking up Subaru transmissions to other engines.

yeah, I'm with the "why?" buuuuut, I think it'd might be cool if you did the whole yota drive train: motor, tranny, and rear solid axle (maybe a front too) all this with a lift of course

Or buy a Toyota?

I would look at the overall length of the engine I think the yota moter would be too long

Dain']yeah' date=' no shirt(without the r), why not just buy a toyota?[/quote']

lol...seriously. Toyota's are awesome cars too, so if you want a Toyota engine and drivetrain, just buy a Toyota. if you want to stick with the wagon setup, try to find one of the 4WD Camrys. They're rare, but they're out there...I've seen 2 total, and I'm a state safety inspector.

I like this Idea, and my wagon has a 6 inch lift, so swapping the Toyota running gear would just be a matter of fabrication. As for everyone else who says just buy a Toyota, I like the Subaru body styles better, but Toyota running gear is known for it's durability. Plus it gives me something to do in my spare time :Flame:

go for it.

then put the EA82 into a Toyota body..

j/k

I completely understand the statement "it gives me something to do in my spare time" Have fun doing it.

Sorry, I just think there are better things that could be done in your spare time :-p

Well, I would start working on my Brat, but I need money for that, and I have the Toyota parts

You can use a suzuki samari t case and put toy axles under it. The suzuki t case is separted. This will give you double low plus trail gear has a gear set 6:1 for the suzuki t case.

the 22rt would be the way to go.but , you would probably need another 6 or so inches.,cause those motors are tall.the running gear you are right on.there are two major problems, the first being the motor height, and the second being the starter placement on either....it is reversed.toyota is on the passenger side.i already went through this one, until i just bought a complete frame and decided to hook an ej22 up to the toyota transfer case.:headbang:
