shifting noise

Featured Replies

I feel like I use to know what this meant and I cannot seem to remember...

When I shift & am accelerating, or when I use engine compression to slow my speed down, I sometimes get a popping noise coming from under the car. Driveline? Exaust? I just can't seem to remember...Thanks!

I'm not sure either, but if the exhaust is backfiring under the conditions stated above you might have a lean fuel mixture. Good luck.

Could be a vast number of things - anything from loose leading rods, to bad tranny mounts, to loose axle nuts, to strut tops, to..... etc, etc. I've experienced no fewer than half a dozen reasons for "poping" or "clunking" when taking off. Just the nature of loose suspension components. You'll just have to troubleshoot and try to narrow it down.

Well...this also happens if I downshift to slow down, and I'll get a series of them. I'm much more inclined to think exhaust or driveline...Doesn't seem like suspension.. Thanks everybody, I'll check some stuff out.

if your exhaust is shot (has holes in it) it will make a popping/rumbling sound when you are braking on the motor.

Thanks, I'll check into that.
