disty question

Featured Replies

i found a 2wd xt rubo distributor. I think it is a 87 (the same year as my 87 trubo wagon), is there a way to tell. I know 87's are different from surrounding years. # ofvacuum ports, advances may be different. also even though its a 2wd turbo, does it still have the better curve because its 2wd.

i just recently swapped my 86' 2wd turbo disty into my 85' rx.. i noticed a big power difference.. and after 5k rpm's it no longer looses pull.. it pulls hard up past redline.. didn't push it over 6500 tho but was still pullin hard even then..

not sure on the year thing, i always thought the 85 and 86's were different from the 87+ due to the maf, various sensors, etc..

at any rate, i would say compare it to yours, vacuum line, plugs, wires, etc.. if it will "hook" up the same as yours i'd say put it in, you'll notice a difference..

So the 2wd disty has a better output? I have an 1985 carbbed EA82 D/R 4x4, could I use a 2wd disty to gain better top end performance? Does the Turbo versus Carb disty make the difference?

87 and newer EFI(SPFI, MPFI, Turbo) don't have vacuum ports. They are optical, CAS type distributors. they are interchangable, and I don't think there is a difference in power curves. I have had both 2wd (2 of them)and 4wd distributors in my car and they seem to function the same

I am currently running an 88 2wd turbo disty in my 87 4wd turbowagon. No difference.

Skip looked it up a while back, and the 4WD distys have a better power curve. The whole 2WD thing is a wives tale apparently.

So being that I have a 4wd model then I should stick with my disty I have.

As I recall, Skip got that info from the FSM. Also - the 4WD ones (at least on the EA81's) are made by hitachi, and seem to be more tollerant of shaft play. My 2WD one would no longer function with half the shaft play that I have seen on perfectly functioning hitatchi's.... had to have it re-bushed.

It's me with the disty on ebay. Yeah, I don't remember the year. It has 1 port for the vacuum canister. Hope this helps.

Does anyone know what the airgap does on the disty. I noticed that turbos had an air gap, but n/a 's don't.
